The study was conducted at the Environmental Stress Research Site of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh during October 1999 to April 2000. To evaluate 530 mungbean genotypes of diverse growth habits and different geographical origins for response to soil flooding. The first and second principal components of principal component analysis results accounted for 58 and 14%, respectively of the total variations of mungbean genotypes. The variation for first PC was composed mainly of relative dry weight (DW) of shoot and leaf as well as total DW. The second PC distinguished the genotypes that produced larger root system. There were seven clusters distinguished in the cluster analysis. The genotypes in cluster 4 and 6 performed better in respect of relative total DW and relative root DW, respectively and hence having flooding tolerance. The genotypes in clusters 7 and 1 performed very poorly and those of under clusters 3, 2 and 5 were moderate to poor. D2 analysis indicated that the clusters differed significantly from each other. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) reaffirmed that more than 90% of the genotypes were correctly assigned to clusters. Both PCA and DFA confirmed that the relative total DW followed by shoot and leaf DW as well as leaf area were the major discriminatory variables and the root : shoot ratio and root DW were the secondary important variables to distinguish genotypes into groups. In this study, multivariate analysis were used in identifying the mungbean genotypes of desirable traits for flooding tolerance.

To evaluate 530 mungbean genotypes of diverse growth habits and different geographical origins for response to soil flooding.

Most of the genotypes were Asian (460) followed by American (35), European (27), Australian (4) African (2) and two were unknown.  The genotypes were grown in plastic trays (20 × 14 × 5 cm) containing field soils mixed with well decomposed cowdung in a 4:1 ratio and no chemical fertilizer was added. Two seeds were planted in each tray and after germination a single plant was allowed to grow. The trays were arranged in a way that maintained plant spacing of 20 · 14 cm. The treatments were arranged in rows (genotypes)-columns (flooding treatments: flooded and non-flooded control) and replicated four times. Plants at 18 days after emergence (DAE) were subjected to soil flooding for five consecutive days maintaining flooding depth of 1.5 cm above the soil surface. The seedlings exposed to flooding as well as non- flooded control plants were harvested at seven day after termination of flooding. Eleven characters viz. plant height, number of leaves per plant, dry weights of stem, leaf, petiole, root, shoot; leaf area, root:shoot ratio and chlorophyll content of each genotype were measured. The change in above morphological and physiological characters as observed visually at the termination of flooding was rather smaller. Thus data on flooding induced changes of one-week old seedlings of 530 genotypes have only been compared in the study. Instead of using absolute values, the relative values of the plant characters were used in order to making the comparison more meaningful towards identifying genotypes or groups of genotypes tolerant to soil flooding. For this data on eleven relative plant characters each of 530 genotypes were subjected to multivariate analysis using principal component analysis and discriminant function analysis. The relative plant performance in respect of each variable was calculated as variable measured in flooded plants divided by variable measured in control plants. Analysis of genetic variation among 530 mungbean genotypes for flooding stress was performed with the program SPSS. Derivation of orthogonal variables using principal components analysis (PCA). Classification of genotypes into homogenous groups by the non-hierarchical k-means technique of cluster analysis. Verification of the significance of groups by multiple group discriminant function analysis (DFA) to determine the power of each variable to separate groups.

Mungbean exhibited a wide range of variation in the flooding induced changes in morphological and physiological characters in mungbean. However, multivariate analysis could effectively be used in identifying the mungbean genotypes of desirable traits for flooding tolerance.
