This experiment was carried out to find out the performance of four aromatic rice cultivars viz.BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan50 and Chinigura with different weed control methods viz. control (no weeding), one hand weeding at 15 DAT, two hand weeding 15 DAT + 40 DAT, Topstar® 400 SC (Oxadiargyl 400 g L-1) @ 100 g ha-1 as post-emergence and Sunrice® 150 WG (Ethoxysulfuron 150 g kg-1) @ 185 ml ha-1 as pre-emergence herbicide in the sub plot in split plot design. BRRI dhan34 gave highest (3.16 t ha-1) and BRRI dhan50 produced lowest grain yield (1.88 t ha-1). The result showed that pre-emergence herbicide Sunrice® 150 WG controlled weeds very successfully which performed better in response of yield contributing characters of rice. Application of Sunrice® 150 WG achieved highest grain yield which was 50.73%, 32.07%, 11.95% and 5.25% higher than the yield obtained from control, one hand weeding, two hand weeding and Topstar® 400 SC treated plots, respectively. The interaction of BRRI dhan34 in combination with Sunrice® 150 WG produced the highest grain yield (4.10 t ha-1) while lowest grain yield (1.44t ha-1) was obtained from BRRI dhan50 in control treatment. Sunrice ® 150 WG achieved highest benefit cost ratio (2.26) over the others and control achieved the lowest (1.17).

To find out the performance of four aromatic rice cultivars viz.BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan50 and Chinigura with different weed control methods.

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, during Aman season (July to December, 2011). The soil was silty-loam, low in organic matter and nitrogen content. The experiment was laid out a in split plot design with three replications having four varieties i.e. BRRI dhan34 (V1), BRRI dhan37 (V2), BRRI dhan50 (V3) and Chinigura (V4) in the main plot and five weed management methods viz. control (no weeding) (W0), one hand weeding at 15 DAT (W1), two hand weeding 15 DAT + 40 DAT (W2), Topstar 400 SC (Oxadiargyl 400 g L-1) @ 100 g ha-1 as post-emergence (W3) and Sunrice 150 WG (Ethoxysulfuron 150 g kg-1) @ 185 ml ha-1 as pre-emergence herbicide (W4) in the sub plot. Sunrice 150 WG (Pre emergence herbicide) were applied at 5 DAT in 4-5 cm standing water for 3-5 days but Topstar 400 SC (Post emergence herbicide) was applied at 10 DAT when weeds were 2-3 leaf stage. The field was fertilized with nitrogen, phosphate, potash, sulphur and zinc at the rate of 150, 100, 70, 60 and 10 kg ha-1 respectively in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate. The whole amount of all the fertilizers except urea were applied at the time of final land preparation and thoroughly incorporated with the soil. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits on 15, 30, and 45 DAT. Twenty five days old seedling was transplanted using two seedlings hill-1 maintaining the spacing with 25 cm×15 cm on the well puddle plots on 08 August, 2011. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on weed density and dry weight were taken from each plot at 15 days interval. The weeds were identified species-wise. Relative weed density (RWD) and weed control efficiency (WCE) of different weed control treatments were calculated with the formulas. Importance value of weed (IVM) according to variety was calculated based on the relative density of weeds in different varietal plots. Data on plant height, effective tillers, grains panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, grain and straw yield, land value, interests on it, cost of land preparation, labors, fertilizers, herbicides, seeds, irrigation, price of products and byproducts were collected. Yield attributes data were analyzed with analysis of variance using MSTAT-C and means were compared by DMRT. Economic performance was evaluated in terms of total variable cost, gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio. Gross return from aromatic rice cultivation was estimated as value of grain (Tk. ha-1) + value of straw (Tk. ha-1). Gross margin was calculated.

The use of herbicide could be an alternative cost effective weed control approach. Sunrice 150 WG could be applied to increase weed control efficiency and profitable aromatic rice production in Aman season.
