A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of variety and different plant densities on growth and yield of rapeseed mustard during Rabi 2011-12 under rainfed conditions at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Four varieties (BARISarisha-13, BARISarisha-15, BARISarisha-16 and SAUSarisha-3) and four plant densities (10, 40, 70 and 100 plants m-2) were applied during the course of study. Results indicated that both variety and plant density has significant effects on growth and seed yield of rapeseed mustard BARISarisha-13 (V1) performed well in terms of Branches plant-1 (6.14), Siliqua plant-1 (126.90), seeds siliqua-1 (25.36) and 1000 seed weight (4.00). Branches plant-1 (6.84) and Siliqua plant-1 (95.04) significantly increased by decreasing plant density due to less competition among plants for moisture, light and nutrients. Maximum seed yield (1.60 t ha-1) was recorded for BARIsarisha-13 with 70 plants m-2 (V1P3). Thus, it is concluded that BARISarisha-13 should be grown at 70 plants m-2 for higher yield output.

To find out the effect of population density and variety on the growth and yield of Rapeseed-mustard.

The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), under the agro-ecological zone of Modhupur Tract, AEZ-28, during Rabi season (November, 2011 to February 2012) with a view to find out the effect of population density and variety on the growth and yield of Rapeseed-mustard. E longitude at the elevation of 18 m above the sea level. The farm belongs to the Shallow Red Brown Terrace Soils under Tejgaon Series containing 25.68, 53.85 and 20.47% of sand, silt and clay, respectively. The soil was silty-loam with 0.30, 0.54 and 0.027% organic carbon, organic matter and total nitrogen, respectively and also 23.66 μ , .6 , 8. 3 μ , . μ , .31 μ f u , b , u u , b nd zinc, respectively with pH 7.1. The experiment was laid out in Split plot design with three replications. The experimental treatments included four varieties (V1=BARISarisha-13, V2=BARISarisha-15, V3=BARISarisha-16, V4=SAUSarisha-3) and four levels of population density (P1=10 plants m-2, P2=40 plants m-2, P3=70 plants m-2, P4=100 plants m-2). Fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. Seeds were sown on 1st November 2011 after completion of germination test and according to treatment specification. Intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning and chemical pest management were done as and when required. Irrigation was done at 25 days and 45 days of sowing in order to maintain adequate moisture in the field. The maturity of crop was determined when 80% to 85% of pods become grey in color. Ten plants in each plot were randomly selected and tagged for recording branches plant-1, siliqua plant-1, seeds siliqua-1 and 1000-seed weight at the time of harvest. An area of 1 m2 was harvested from center of each plot and the seeds were sun dried and threshed. The seeds were separated from the siliqua by beating with bamboo sticks and later were cleaned, dried, weighed and converted into t ha-1. The data were analyzed statistically using the MSTAT-C computer package program and mean differences among the treatments were compared by least significance difference at 5% level of significance.

Better performance was observed at higher plant densities over lower ones in terms of yield contributing characteristics. Thus it is suggested that BARISarisha-13 should be grown at 70 plants m-2 for higher output.
