An experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur for evaluating the variation of mineral ion accumulation in different plant parts of soybean genotypes at different levels of salinity. Eleven soybean genotypes - AGS313, G00209, G00028, G00283, PK416, AGS399, G00138, BARI Soybean5, Shohag, Bangladesh soybean4 and G00046 were treated with 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCI solutions. The application of saline water increased Na+ concentration and Na: K ratio, while decreased K+ and Ca2+ concentrations in stem, leaves and roots. The genotypes X salinity showed a significant interaction. The relative accumulation of Na+ and Na:K ratio in shoot was the lowest in AGS313 followed by G00209; while the highest in G00046 followed by Bangladesh soybean4 and Shohag. In contrast to shoot, the higher root accumulation of Na+ was observed in AGS313 and G00209 compared to other genotypes, especially at higher level of salinity. The maintenance of lower Na+ and Na:K ratio in the shoots of AGS313 and G00209 at the expense of higher content of Na+ in the roots might be considered as one of the important salt tolerance mechanisms in soybean.

To analyze the accumulation pattern of Na+, K+ and Ca++ ions in different plant parts of 11 soybean genotypes grown at different levels of NaCI concentration.

The study was conducted inside a vinyl house under natural light at the Environmental Stress Research Site of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur, Bangladesh from November 2007 through March 2008. Plants of eleven soybean (Glycine max L,) genotypes i.e. AGS313, G00209, G00028, G00283, PK416, AGS399, G00138, BARI Soybean5, Shohag, Bangladesh Soybean4 and G00046 were grown in plastic pots of 24x30cm in size containing 12 kg air dried soil. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with 4 replications. After seedling establishment, two uniform and healthy plants were allowed to grow in each pot. Intercultural operations and pest control measures were taken properly. When the first trifoliate leaf of the plants appeared, 1000ml of 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCI solutions was applied. Salt solutions were prepared artificially by dissolving the required amount of NaCI with tap water. The salt solution was applied stepwise with an increment of 25 mM in every alternate day till respective concentrations attained. It was applied in excess so that the extra solution dripped out through the holes at the bottom of the pots. At harvest the plants were separated into roots, stem and leaf. The samples were oven-dried to a constant weight and then 100mg dried samples of each plant part were powdered with a Wiley Mill grinder to measure sodium, potassium and calcium concentrations, Dried plant samples were digested with nitric-perchloric acid solution. The ions were determined with an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Data recorded in two different salinity treatments were compared with those in control treatment. The recorded data were statistically analyzed with the help qf MSTAT-C program and the difference between the treatments mean were compared by LSD test.

In conclusion, there was a marked variation in the accumulation of mineral ions in soybean genotypes. The genotypes accumulated lower amount of Na+ and higher amount of K+ also maintained a lower Na: K ratio in the leaves and shoots compared to the genotypes accumulated relatively high amount of Na+. The genotypes showed relatively lower amount of Na+ in the leaves and shoots, expressed higher amount of the ion in the root, which is considered as one of the salt tolerance mechanisms in soybean.
