Growth and Yield of Summer Tomato as Influenced by Reduced Light Intensity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted in the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from April 2012 to October 2012 to evaluate the influence of light intensity on tomato yield. The experiment consisted of three levels of light intensity (viz. L₁: Full sunlight, L₂: 20 % reduced sunlight and L₃: 40% reduced sunlight. Significant variation was observed for the different parameter of summer tomato with light intensity. Highest plant height (26.2 cm at 60 DAT), leaf number (49.6 at 60 DAT), branch number (5.5/plant at 60 DAT), number of flower (58.4/plant), number of fruit (39.5), length of fruit (4.8 cm), diameter of fruit (4.5 cm), weight of individual fruit (40.9 g) and yield (22.32 t/ha) of tomato was found from L₂ which was statistically similar to those of L₃ the corresponding values were observed in L₁ treatment.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of reduced light intensity on summer tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the Horticultural Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh, during the period from April 2012 to October 2012 to find out the effect of reduced light intensity on summer tomato. Climate of the experimental site was subtropical in nature, characterized by heavy rainfall during the month from April to September (Kharif season). The experiment consisted of different light intensity as full sunlight (L₁), 20% reduced sunlight (L₂) and 40% reduced sunlight (L₃). After transplanting the tomato seedling, blue nylon nets were hanged at a height of 2.0 meters with bamboo sticks to reduce light intensity. Single layer net was used to reduce the light intensity up to 20% and double layer net was used to reduce light up to 40%. Light intensity was measured by Portable light intensity meter (ProsKit MT-4017 Light Intensity Meter) and reduction percentages were calculated over control. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of the plot was 1.6 m × 1.2 m. The distance between two blocks and two plots were 0.75 m and 0.5 m respectively. BARI Tomato-4 variety was used in the study. Cowdung (10 t ha^-1), urea (300 kg ha^-1), TSP (200 kg ha^-1) and MOP (90 kg ha^-1) were used. The entire amount of organic manure, TSP, Gypsum, Borax and half of the MOP were applied during final land preparation. The remaining half MOP and entire urea are to be applied in three equal installments, 1^st at 15 days after planting, 2^nd at flowering and the 3^rd at fruit maturity. Healthy and uniform 30 days-old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental plots in the afternoon of 25 April, 2012 maintaining a spacing of 60 cm × 40 cm between the rows and plants, respectively. Five plants were randomly selected from each unit plot for the collection of data. Data on plant height, number of leaves and branches per plant, number of flower cluster per plant and flowers per cluster, number of flowers per plant, number of fruits per cluster, number of fruits per plant, length and diameter of fruit, average weight of individual fruit, yield per plot and per hectare were measured. The data obtained for different characters were statistically analyzed to find out the analysis of variance and the means were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest yield (22.3 t ha^-1) was obtained from L₂ which was statistically similar (22.0 t ha^-1) to L3 while the lowest yield (20.2 t ha^-1) from L₁.
