Thirty Second Semi-arid Wheat Screening Nursery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One hundred and ninety six elite genotypes received from CIMMYT, Mexico were evaluated against the check variety BARI Gom 26 in RWRC Rajshahi during Rabi 2014-15. The plot size of the nursery was 2.5m long with 2 rows and the row distance was 20 cm. The genotypes were evaluated for yield, heading, Bipolaris leaf blight tolerance, leaf rust resistance, sterility tolerance, visual grain quality, boldness of grains etc. On the basis of visual grain quality, yield contributing traits and others agronomical performances only fourteen genotypes (E-1, E-6, E-19, E-28, E-61, E-66, E-127, E-, E-132, E-138, E-145, E-158, E-171, E-177 and E-206) were selected from RWRC, Rajshahi for further evaluation.

Objectives:

The objective of this nursery was to evaluate some CIMMYT advance lines and to select the promising ones for semi-Arid environment in Bangaldesh context.

Methodology:

The nursery was consisted of 196 entries along with the check variety BARI Gom 26 at every 20 entry. The nursery was sown on November 16, 2014. The experiment was laid out in non-replicated design. Fertilizers were applied @ N₁₀₀ P₂₆ K₅₀ S₂₀ B₁ kg/ha with one third of urea applied as top dress at 1^st irrigation during CRI stage. The unit plot size was 2.5m long with 2 rows at 20 cm apart. The crop was raised under rain-fed timely sown (RTS) condition with single irrigation at CRI stage in order to have a good plant establishment. All recommended agronomical practices were done for getting the better performance of yield. Data were recorded on different agronomic characters according to supplied CIMMYT data book. The whole plot was harvested to get grain yield data, and yield was converted in kg ha^-1.

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes showed a wide range of variation for yield and others yield contributing characters studied. Some genotypes exhibited sterility to different levels and rejected for selection. On the basis of overall performance only fourteen genotypes were found suitable for this environment and selected for further evaluation. Among the selected genotypes, E-19(61 days),E-1(62 days), E-158 (63 days), E-6 (64 days), E-138(64 days) and E-177(64 days) were earlier in heading than the check BARI Gom 26 (65 days). Among selected entries, the maximum yield (6050 kg ha^-1) was recorded in case of E-206 compare to check variety with more or less similar grain size (42.35g of thousand grain weight). The maximum thousand grain weight (45.25g) was recorded from E-145 but its gain yield was lower (3820 kg ha^-1) than check (5490 kg ha^-1). In case of agronomical performance all of selected entries were not good compare with check variety BARI Gom 26. A total of 14 entries were selected out of 196 entries from 32^nd SAWSN trial and these seeds were preserved for further evaluation in the next growing season.
