A field experiment was conducted with soybean (BARI Soybean-5) at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka during the period from December 2008 to April 2009. The experimental soil was clay loam in texture having pH of 6.3. The experiment included four levels of potassium viz. 0, 20, 40 and 70 kg K ha-1 and four levels of sulphur viz. 0, 10, 20 and 40 kg S ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Potassium and Sulphur showed significant effect on yield and yield attributes of soybean. Application of potassium @ 40 kg ha-1 produced the highest plant height, seed yield, 1000-seed weight and straw yield. Application of sulphur @ 20 kg ha-1 produced the highest plant height, seed yield, 1000-seed weight and straw yield. Potassium in combination with Sulphur showed significant effect on yield and yield attributes of soybean. Combined application of Potassium @ 40 kg ha-1 and sulphur @ 20 kg ha-1 resulted the highest seed yield, plant height, 1000-seed weight, straw yield, protein and oil contents of soybean. On the other hand, in all the cases the lower response was found from the control treatment.

To study the role of potassium and sulphur on the growth, yield and oil content of soybean (Glycine max var.BARI Soybean-5)

This experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm Dhaka-1207 (Tejgaon series under AEZ No.28) during the rabi season of 2008. The characteristics of initial surface soil (0-15 cm) were: pH 6.3, textural class clay loam, total N 0.075%, Organic matter 0.80%,available phosphorous 16 (mg kg-1) , available potassium 0.38 (cmol kg-1), available sulphur 10 (mg kg-1) and available zinc 1.30 (mg kg-1). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design, each plot measuring 2.5 m × 2.0 m (5 m2) with 3 replications. The experiment consisted of 2 factors viz. 4 levels of potassium: K0 = 0 kg K ha-1  , K1 = 20 kg K ha-1 , K2 =40 kg K ha-1, K3 = 70 kg K ha-1  and 4 levels of sulphur: S0 = 0  kg S ha-1 , S1 = 10 kg S ha-1 , S2 = 20 kg S ha-1 , S3 =40 kg S ha-1. BARI Soybean-5, a high yielding variety of soybean was used as the test crop in this experiment. Recommended doses of N, P, Zn and B (30 kg N from urea, 30 kg P from TSP, 2 kg Zn from ZnO and 1 kg B ha-1 from Boric acid, respectively) were applied. The whole amounts of TSP, ZnO, Boric acid and half of the urea fertilizer were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The remaining half of urea was top dressed after 22 days of germination. The required amounts of K (from MP) and S (from gypsum) were applied at a time as per treatment combination after field lay out of the experiment and were mixed properly through hand spading. Soybean seeds were sown on the 27th December 2008 in lines following the recommended line to line distance of 30 cm and plant to plant distance of 5 cm. The crop was harvested on 16th April 2009. The harvested crop of each individual plots were recorded plot wise and the yields were expressed in t ha 1. Plant samples were collected from every individual plot for chemical analysis. Ten plants were randomly collected from each plot to record yield contributing characters and stored for chemical analysis. The data were analyzed statistically to find out the treatment difference and the mean differences were compared by DMRT.

The combined application of K and S had positive effect on grain yield of soybean. The highest grain yield of soybean (2.35 t ha-1) was recorded in K2S2 treatment. The lowest yield (1.33 t ha-1) was recorded in K0S0 treatment. Combined application of K @ 40 kg ha-1 and S @ 20 kg ha-1 produced higher grain yield compared to control treatment significantly. Protein content in seeds of soybean was significantly increased due to application of K and S. The range of protein content in seeds varied from 38.41% in K0S0 to 44.55% in K2S2 treatment. Application of K @ 40 kg ha-1 and S @ 20 kg ha-1 produced higher protein content in seed compared to control treatment significantly. Oil content in seeds of soybean was significantly increased due to application of K and S. The range of oil content in seeds varied from 18.54% in K0S0 to 21.48% in K2S2 treatment. Application of K @ 40 kg ha-1 and S @ 20 kg ha-1 produced higher oil content in seed compared to control treatment significantly.
