Agriculture Oriented Income Generating Activities of Rural Women in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Rangpur district of Bangladesh. A sample of 220 women engaged in agriculture oriented income generating activities was selected proportionally by using random sampling technique. The results indicated that the income generating activities in which women participated were vegetable cultivation, post harvest operations, poultry rising, livestock rearing, tree plantation, and fish cultivation. Majority of the respondents were satisfied up to medium level. The main reasons of dissatisfaction were the work not available throughout year, lack of time for rest, over busy schedule and more work less pay system.

Objectives:

To know the different income generating activities performed by rural women and to determine their level of satisfaction and the reasons for dissatisfaction.

Methodology:

A purposive random sampling technique was used for the selection of the respondents. Selection of two Upazilla was treated as first stage, selection of villages as second stage and selection of families as that final stage. Two Upazilla were purposively selected, namely, Pirgonj and Rangpur Sadar. Five villages from each Upazilla were selected, namely, Nakherpara, Dulgari, Karimpur. Dormoduspur, and Azompur village from Pirgonj and Baro Aoulia, Binodpur, Sardderpara, Horirampur and Akkelpur villages from Rangpur sadar upazilla. A complete list of families where women were engaged in income generating activities was prepared and a sample of 220 women was selected proportionately. The data were collected through interview and analyzed statistically. The data were collected during 13- 01 -2011 to 13- 07 -2011.

Achievement/Findings:

Bangladesh is an agro-based country with marked limitation in her socio-economic status. But the scenario is getting changed, when the very life-force and harsh-reality has started engaging a good number of rural women to earn their own livelihood. The present paper provides such evidence of women's participation in our rural -arena. So, with many of the loopholes, it may be said that such participating would usher a newer horizon in our rural community, so far the women-empowerment is concerned.
