MD. MAHADI HASAN
Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

The present study was conducted to know the culture strategies, fish health and disease problems in pond aquaculture in Mymensingh, Bogra and Pabna district of Bangladesh. Questionnaire interview and participatory rural appraisal tools like focus group discussion (FGD) were conducted with selected farmers. In total 90 farmers were interviewed and 9 FGD sessions were conducted. In addition, clinical and histopathological studies were carried out to examine disease status of fish sampled from different ponds in Mymensingh area. Most of the respondents practiced carp and pangas polyculture and they had disease problems in their ponds. Prevalence of fish disease varied with cultured species and locations. The most prevalent diseases as reported by the respondents were pop eye (57.78%), ventral reddening (55.55%), tail and fin rot (48.89), hemorrhagic lesion over the body surface (45.56%), dropsy (40%), gill rot (40%), white spot (40%) and epizootic ulcerative syndrome or EUS (33.33%). According to farmers opinion most susceptible species to disease was silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (57.78%); followed by mrigal, Cirrhinus cirrhosus (50%); catla, Catla catla (47.78%); sarputi, Barbodes gonionotus (47.78%); rui, Labio rohita (42.22%) and pangas, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (42.22%). Higher mortality was found in pangas (53.56%). Clinically pangas, koi and sarputi were found severely affected. Histopathologically, all the organs of sampled fish were found affected to some extent while pangas and mrigal had severe pathology. Most of the farmers used some treatment measures against disease problems. This study also identified some fish health management problems in pond aquaculture. All the infectious diseases reported by the farmers could not be confirmed by laboratory study. Further studies should include identification and characterization of pathogens involved in different types of diseases in pond aquaculture.

a) To examine fish culture strategies, fish disease and health management problems in pond aquaculture through field observation and
b) To examine fish disease outbreak in pond aquaculture through clinical and histopathological technique.

Field survey: For field study, data on status of pond aquaculture system, stocking and feeding strategies, production, occurrence of diseases, affected species, mortality, health management strategies and problems were collected. The field study included three districts Mymensingh, Pabna and Bogra. Data collection method: Questionnaire Interview: Primary data was collected through the questionnaire interview. A set of preliminary questionnaire was prepared. The questionnaire focused mainly on the status of fish farming systems, pond preparation, stocking and pond management, culture species, diseases prevalence, clinical signs, affected species and season, farmer’s knowledge on fish disease, farmer’s ability to diagnose disease, fish disease prevention and treatment, health management practices and problems, use of chemicals etc. This was field tested with a few target people. In this pilot survey much attention was given to any new information, which was not designed to ask but was important and informative towards the objectives. Thus necessary modifications were made based on the feedback and the final questionnaire was prepared on the basis of pilot survey. The questionnaire was composed of both closed and open form of question. For the interview, random stratified sampling method was followed. A total of 90 fish farmers (30 farmers from each district) from three districts were interviewed using the questionnaire. Participatory rural appraisal (PRA): Qualitative data was collected through PRA tools like focus group discussion (FGD). Nine FGD sessions in three districts were conducted to get an overview of issues fish disease and health management strategies by the farmers. Each group size was between 6 and 12 farmers. Cross check interviews were conducted with key informants. Though the questionnaire was semi-structured but participatory approaches were used all through. Laboratory study:  Collection of fish sample For laboratory analysis, diseased fish were collected from different fish farms of Trishal, Bhaluka and Mymensingh sadar upzilla after gross diagnosis on the spot. Then the live fishes were immediately carried to the fish disease laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries, BAU, Mymensingh. Live fish samples were transported by plastic buckets filled with water. Clinical observation: The sampled fishes were examined just after taking out of the container to observe external signs and record any injury, infection and other abnormal conditions of fish body through naked eye.

According to the farmer’s opinion, silver carp, mrigal, catla, sarputi, rui and pangas were the most susceptible species to disease. Pangas was found to have higher mortality. Pangas, koi and sarputi were found having severe clinical signs. Massive pathological changes were found in the organs of pangas and mrigal compared to the other species. Application of lime and salt in pond were the most common treatment followed by the use of antibiotics, potassium permanganate and copper sulphate. This study also identified fish health management problems in pond aquaculture which included poor understanding on fish disease and health management, lack of suitable therapeutics and their approprriate uses and lack of assistance regarding fish disease treatment. All the infectious diseases reported here by the farmers could not be confirmed by laboratory study. It would have been better if laboratory diagnosis could be performed to identify and characterize the pathogens involved in different types of diseases. Also, there is a need to train farmers on simple diagnostic procedure and effective therapy. It is also important to establish fish disease diagnostic clinic to provide assistance to farmers on fish health management.
