The study has been conducted on the fecundity of Jat punti, Puntius sophore, estimated based on 100 female fishes collected from the experimental ponds of the Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period from June to August 2011. The surveyed samples were divided into three groups A (collected in June), group B (collected in July), group C (collected in August). The estimated fecundity ranged of 7,951 to 17,670, 8,135 to 23,053, and 12,461 to 15,105 eggs and the mean gonadosomatic index (GSI) of 23.44 ± 2.50, 30.47 ± 4.52, 28.43 ± 2.99 was estimated for the fish group of A, B, and C, respectively. The relationship between fecundity and total length was linear and it was expressed as: Ln F= 1634 ln TL-1972, Ln F= 119405 ln TL-273.53, Ln F= 1831.6 ln TL+ 825.31 in group A, B, and C, respectively. The regression equation between body weight and total length was linear and it was expressed as: Ln W= 2.2128 ln TL- 0.7048, Ln W= 2.0207 ln TL+ 0.3493, Ln W= 1.4438 ln TL+ 5.5694, in group A, B, and C, respectively. The regression equation between body weight and fecundity was F= 656.84 W+199.96, F= 438.16 W+2470, F= 1116.1 W-3433.5, in group A, B, and C, respectively. The percentages of the male and female fishes of the three groups were 28, 36, and 40% male, and 72, 64, and 60% female in group A, B, and C, respectively. Fecundity of P. sophore varied between 7,951 to 23,053 eggs for fish ranging in length from 7 to 12 cm and 10.12 to 26.5 gm in weight. Puntius sophore may be a medium fecund fish.

1) To determine the fecundity of P. sophore of Mymensingh region of Bangladesh; and
2) To estimate the empirical relationship between the total length-body weight, total length-fecundity, body weight-fecundity of the species.

Site of experiment: The work was conducted at the Hatchery of the Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment was done from June to August 2011. Collection of brood fish: The brood fish were collected from the ponds of the Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. About 150 P. sophore both males and females were collected from the source in the months of June, July, and August, 2011. Selection of sample: The breeder’s body structure was easily identified on the basis of external feature of their abdomen, vent and pectoral fins. The female abdomen is enlarge, with a softy touch (during the breeding season) enable them to be identified correctly. Preservations of fish specimens: After selection of the fishes, the specimens were preserved in 10 % buffered formalin. The fishes were kept into three labeled vials according to the month. Measure of length and weight: First take the fish from the vial and dried off with the help of the tissue paper. Then the standard length and total length were recorded separately to the nearest centimeter scale respectively. The standard length was measured from the anterior part of the head with the jaws closed, to the base of the caudal fin. The total length was measured from the anterior part of the head with the jaws closed, to the posterior end of the caudal fin. The measurement was taken along straight line and was not taken along the curved of the body. A steel scale was used to measure the length of the body. The weight of the specimens was taken by an electric balance and the weights were recorded to the nearest gram. The recording of the gutted weight of the fishes was not considered because of the small or insignificant size of the stomach. Collection of ovaries: The collected fishes were brought to the dissection tray and the abdomens of the fishes were cut to expose the gonads. The fishes were dissected out by scissors starting from anus to lower jaw and the belly was opened. The whole mass (stomach, intestine, and the ovary) were removed carefully from the ovarian wall by means of fine forceps and soft brush. The ovary of the individual fish was taken out carefully and preserved in 10 % buffered formalin. Measurement of ovarian weight: The preserved ovary of each fish was taken from the buffered formalin and washed and cleaned with distilled water. Excess moisture was removed as consistently as possible by tissue paper. Then the ovary was weighted to the nearest gram (g) by an electrical balance. Calculation of Gonadosomatic index (GSI): Gonadosomatic index is the percentage of gonad weight to the total weight of the fish. The gonadosomatic index of the collected fish was calculated for each of the female separately. Gonadosomatic index for each specimen was calculated. Calculation of male and female sex ratio: The collected male and female fishes were used to estimate the sex ratio. All fishes were dissected out by scissors starting from anus to lower jaw and the belly was opened to know the sex. By counting the number of male and female fishes the sex ratio can be estimated. Data Processing: From the above data the relationship of different parameters such as total length and fecundity, body weight and fecundity, total length and body weight, were determined as simple linear relationship with the help of MS Excel Programme. Coefficient of correlation (r), regression equation, standard deviation, was also determined.

It was concluded that all the relationships between total length and body weight of the fishes were found to be cubic and significant. The relationships between fecundity and body weight of the fishes were found to be linear and highly significant. This study has provided some basic information on the size at sexual maturity and fecundity for P. sophore that will be helpful to evaluate reproductive potential of individual fish species in similar studies. Further, it would be useful for fishery biologist/manager to impose adequate regulation for sustainable fishery management for the control of exploiting fishing of young individuals and when associated with other information aids in evaluation and prediction of fish stock in the different water bodies of Bangladesh.
