Economic Analysis of BARI Lentill Cultivation in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh- a Micro Level Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Pabna and Jessore districts to know the farm level input use pattern and profitability of BARI masur cultivation during 2006-07. Data collection was through well structured questionnaire administered on 100 respondents selected through simple random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics and gross margin analysis were used as analytical method. BARl masur farming was profitable in the study area with gross margin and net return of Tk 28717 and Tk 22175 respectively. Results revealed that farmers showed positive attitudes towards BARI masur production since the rate of return (BCR) was 2.26, which means that rural development could be possible with the adoption of BARl masur varieties in the present farming systems

Objectives:

To know the input use pattern of the BARl masur cultivation and to ascertain the profitability of the BARI-masur

Methodology:

Pabna and Jessore districts were selected purposively as the study areas because these districts are leading lentil producing areas of Bangladesh. Pabna sadar upazila and Jhikorgacha upazila were selected randomly from Pabna and Jessore district respectively. A Preliminary survey was conducted to gather primary knowledge about the lentil production and its producing area. After preliminary visit, data for the study were collected from April to May, 2007.Data were collected from primary and secondary sources. Secondary data were collected from relevant texts, journals and statistical bulletin. A total100 farmers were selected for the study using simple random sampling technique. Among the randomly selected 100 farmers taking 50 from each upazila. Well-structured questionnaires were used to obtain relevant .information from respondents. Four villages were randomly selected from each district while 25 farmers were selected randomly from each village

It is clearly depicted from the previously mentioned discussion that cultivation of BARI-masur is a profitable enterprise at farm level since the average rate of return (BeR) on investment is 2.26 on full cost basis. Farmer's attitude towards BARI-masur cultivation seemed to be very positive since most of the farmers wanted to increase their masur cultivation area in the coming year. It is therefore, recommended that an effective steps should be taken by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Non Government Organizations (NGOs)for strengthening extension services and skill up gradation of farmers to adopt the BARI-masur varieties to a higher degree. Although masur is a profitable crop, due to various setbacks many farmers showed problems about lentil production such as scarcity of chemical fertilizer, low output price, insect infestation, natural calamity, lack of BARI-masur seed, attack of diseases, lack of technical know-how and high price of chemical fertilizers. Training programme both for the extension workers and farmers to popularize the whole package of lentil production technology is necessary to facilitate transfer of technical knowledge from researchers to the farmers for its wider expansion and dissemination.
