An experiment was conducted on the evaluation of five exotic mango germ plasm (MI-EX 001, MI-EX 002, MI-EX 003, MI-EX 004 and MI-EX 005) at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2009-10. Germplasm MI-EX 005 and MI-EX 004 had the maximum (3.80 m) and the minimum (2.22 m) plant height, respectively. Base girth of the studied germplasm was statistically identical ranging from 14.33 cm (MI-EX 002) to 26.00 cm (MI-EX 005). Regarding canopy spread all the germplasm were statistically identical except MI Ex 001 having the canopy 1.31 m at north-south and 1.37 m at east-west, respectively. The highest fruits per plant were obtained from MI-EX 005 (112.00) and the lowest from MI-EX 001 (56.67). The full blooming period varied from 08 Jan '10 to 01 Feb '10. The tree habit was spreading to intermediate type. Oblong lanceolate leaf shape and deep coppery tan young leaf was found in most of the germplasm. MI-EX 001, MI-EX 004 and MI-EX 005 had wavy leaf margin while MI-EX 002 and MI-EX 003 had flat and folded margin respectively. The leaf tip of MI-EX 001 and MI-EX 003 was acuminate while MI-EX 002 and MI-EX 004 were acute and MI-EX 005 was obtuse.

To study exotic mango germ plasm

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2009-10. Five exotic germplasm of mango were included in this study. These were MI-EX 001, MI-EX 002, MI-EX 003, MI-EX 004 and MI-EX 005. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCRD) with three replications. One year old veneer grafts were planted in the field on July, 2006 at a spacing of 8m × 8 m. A single tree of each germplasm constituted a unit of replication. The trees were fertilized with recommended doses of manure and fertilizers (Hossain, 1989). Intercultural operations such as weeding, ploughing and irrigation were done as and when necessary. Agromethrin 10 EC @ 1 ml and Tilt 250 EC@ 0.5 ml per litre of water was applied twice to control mango hopper and anthracnose. Necessary actions were taken against other pest and diseases as and when needed. Data on tree growth as well as quantitative and qualitative characteristics of leaf was recorded as per ‘Descriptors for Mango’ published by IBPGR in 1989. Tree volume was calculated using the formula of Castle (1983). Tree volume =1/6 ? × plant height × (2r)2, where 2r = (East-West spread + North-South spread)/2. Leaf area was estimated by following the method of Saidha and Rao (1985). Leaf area Y = K.X, where K is constant (0.737) and X = the length of leaf × the breadth of leaf. The incidence of insect and diseases were also recorded in natural epiphytotic condition.

Results revealed that full bloom took place between 8 Jan ’10 to 1 Feb ’10 where MI Ex 005 was the earliest and MI Ex 003 was the latest. The tree habit of the germ plasm was spreading except MI-EX 002 and MI-EX 005 (intermediate tree habit). The leaves of MI-EX 001, MI-EX 003 and MI-EX 004 were oblong lanceolate in shape whereas MI-EX 002 and MI-EX 005 had lanceolate and elliptic lanceolate leaves. The newly emerged leaf colour was deep coppery tan in MI-EX 001, MI-EX 002 and MI-EX 003. The rest of the germ plasm had light brick red leaf color. The overall growth condition of all the germ plasm was satisfactory.
