An experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati during post rainy seasons of the three consecutive years viz. 1995-96, 1996-97 and 1997-98 for comparative analysis and select the best short duration pigeonpea lines that had suitable agronomic characters and high yield potential. There were 15 germplasms (including one local as check) tested in the randomized complete block design. The results revealed that the highest yielder was ICPL 86012 (short duration) with 1300 kg/ha. This line flowered at 88 days and matured at 134 days after sowing. The lowest seed yield (334kg/ha) was produced by the germplasm ICP 8094 (long duration). It took 135 days to flower and 175 days for maturity. There were three germplasms viz. ICPL 86012 (short duration), ICPL 87 (short duration) and ICPL 85063 (medium duration) which out yielded the local check.

To select short duration pigeonpea line(s) from different maturity groups having high yield potential  during post rainy season.

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during the period from October to April of three consecutive years 1995-96, 1996-97 and 1997-98. The land was high having sandy loam texture with pH 6.5-6.8. Fourteen pigeonpea germplasms collected from ICRISAT with local check (long duration variety) were tested. Among the germplasms, there were four maturity groups classified by ICRISAT which were as follows: a) Extra early (maturity group I)-ICPL 84031 (extra early short duration, ESD), ICPL 89011 (ESD), ICPL 88039 (ESD). b) Early (maturity group III)-ICPL 87 (short duration, SD), ICPL 151 (SD), ICPL 86012 (SD), ICPL 88034 (SD), ICPL 89018 (SD). c) medium (maturity group V)- ICPL 332 (medium duration, MD) ICPL 85063 (MD), PUSA 9 (MD), RABI (MD). d) Late (maturity group VIII)-ICPL 366 (long duration, LD), ICP 8094 (LD). Sowing dates were 10 October, 02 October and 16 October in 1995, 1996 and 1997, respectively. The materials were sown in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Seeds were sown with a spacing of 40cm x 12.5 cm except local variety which was spaced at 60 cm x 25 cm because of spreading type in nature. The crop was fertilized @ 20 N-50 P2O5 -20K2O kg/ha through urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively, during final land preparation. The incidence of pod borer was quite heavy in all the germplasms. At maturity, four middle rows excluding 0.5m on both ends of the rows, were harvested and threshed for seed yield, and 100-seed weight. The data on five randomly selected plants were recorded for plant height, pod length, number of seeds/pod, and pods/plant. In addition, data on days to 50% flowering and maturity were also recorded. The collected data were analyzed following the principle of randomized complete block design and the mean values were adjusted by least significant difference test.

ICPL 86012 had the highest yield (1300 kg/ha), followed by ICPL 87 (1169 kg/ha). These lines were found better than the check and had favourable agronomic characters for which these could be considered as the best pigeonpea lines. It may be concluded that the farmers of the eastern hilly area of Bangladesh could be advised to grow promising pigeonpea line(s) ICPL 86012 or ICPL 87 replacing the localy cultivated variety for higher yield.
