Collection and Evaluation of Honey Dew (chinal) Germplasm in Hill Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted with eight collected honey dew lines at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati hill district, during the summer season of 2009. Number of fruits/plant ranged from 6.97-10.23 where four lines (CSRAI 003, CSRAI 005, CSRAI 001and CSRAI 008) were high bearer (10.23, 10.03, 9.85 and 9.68). Individual fruit weight varied from 0.68-1.28 kg where heavier fruits produced by two lines CSRAI 003 (1.28 kg) and CSRAI 005 (1.17 kg). Yield (t/ha) varied from 14.20-30.45 tons, the lines CSRAI 003, CSRAI 005 and CSRAI 001 were high yielding (30.45, 28.33 and 26.52 t/ha respectively).

Objectives:

To evaluate the germ plasm.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati during the summer, 2009. Eight germplasm viz. CSRAI 001, CSRAI 002, CSRAI 003, CSRAI 004, CSRAI 005, CSRAI 006, CSRAI 007 and CSRAI 008 were collected from different location in the hilly region. The seeds of eight chinal lines were sown in the poly bag on 1st April, 2009 and 20 days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 20^th April, 2009. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2m x 2m. The land was fertilized with cowdung 10 t/ha, Urea, TSP and MP @ 175, 175 and 150 kg/ha respectively. The total amount of cowdung, TSP and 1/3rd of each Urea and MP were applied during final land preparation and in the pit. The rest of urea, and MP were applied in three equal installments at 20, 40 and 60 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Data on days to anthesis of 1st female flower, number of nodes at 1st female flowering, vine length at 1st female flowering, days to harvest, number of fruits/plant, weight of fruits/plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, TSS, (%), edible portion/fruit, weight of single fruit and yield (t/ha) were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest yield (30.45 t/ha) was obtained from the line CSRAI 003, which was followed by CSRAI 005 (28.33 t/ha) and CSRAI 001 (26.52 t/ha). Cylindrical and round shape fruits were found among the lines. Considering earliness, acceptable fruit character, high yield and attractive fruit color, TSS (%), fruit shape the 3 lines CSRAI 003, CSRAI 005 and CSRAI 001 were selected for further evaluation on the aspect of RYT.
