Efficacy of Urea Super Granule on Yield of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at two locations; Shibganj and Sadar Upazilla during rabi season of 2007-08 to investigate the effect of Urea Super Granule (USG) on potato production. Five treatments were the same in two locations, viz. T₁= Control (N=Zero), T₂= 150 kg N/ha as prilled Urea, T₃= 20% less N (120kg N/ha) as USG, T₄= 10% less N (135 kg N/ha) as USG and T₅= 150 kg N/ha as USG. The highest yield was found in T₅treatmnts at Shigganj (22.64 t/ha) and Bogra sadar (24.32 t/ha). The yield recorded in T₂, T₄ and T₅ were statistically identical in both the location. The lowest yield was found in control plot at Shibganj (13.65 t/ha) and Bogra Sadar (12.35 t/ha). There was a quantum of jump in potato yield with lowest 120 kg N /ha application as USG with treatment T3 at Shibganj (20.74 t/ha) and Bogra Sadar (21.44 t/ha) indicated the conspicuous effect of N over control. The ratio of GR: TVC was the highest in T5 at Shibganj (2.64:1) and Bogra Sadar (2.61:1). Therefore, by reducing 10% N costs through USG application more or equal returns can be obtained over Prilled Urea application. So, farmers can easily reduce 10 kg N as USG without significant yield reduction in potato cultivation.

Objectives:

i) To know the effect of USG on yield of potato and

ii) to minimize reduce the fertilizer cost in potato production

Methodology:

Two field experiments were conducted at different locations during Rabi season, 2007-08. The locations were, i) Shibgonj, Bogra and ii) Sadar Upazilla, Bogra under Tista flood plain (AEZ-4) soil having sandy loam in texture. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 4 replications. The crop was accommodated in 5.4 x 4.25 m² sized unit plot. The treatments were, T₁= Control (N zero), T₂= 150 kg N/ha as prilled Urea, T₃= 20% less N (120kg N/ha) as USG, T₄= 10% less N (135 kg N/ha) as USG and T₅= 150 kg N/ha as USG. Average unit weight of USG was 1.8 gm and 22, 24 and 27 pieces of USG were used per 10 plants in T₃, T₄and T₅ treatments, respectively. The cultivar Granola whole tuber of Potato was planted in line 60 cm apart and 25 cm between plants, thus about 2 t/ha tubers were used. Planting was done on November 22 and 23, 2007. Blanket dose of fertilizers were applied @ (200-250-120-6 kg TSP, MOP, Gypsum, Boric acid kg/ha and Cowdung 10 t/ha). Cowdung was applied during land preparation. Entire amount of TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Boric acid were applied as basal. Prilled urea as per treatment was applied in two installments at 30 and 45 days after planting (DAP). USG as per treatments were placed 5-7 cm depth in one furrow 6-8 cm apart from plant at 30 DAP. The crop was irrigated twice at 31 and 46 DAP. Furadan 5G was applied @10 kg/ha as basal during land preparation and Malathion (0. 2%) sprayed in two installments at 45 and 60 DAP control insects. The crops were also sprayed with Dithane-M 45 (0.2%) and Secure (0.1%)) alternately four times (at 30, 45, 60 and 75 DAP respectively) to prevent and/or control late blight infection of potato (Dey et al., 2007). Haulm pulling was done at 80 DAP for hardening the tubers. Other intercultural operation Viz, weeding, earthing up were done properly as and when necessary. Data on plant vigor was collected on 1-5scale, (where 5= Robust and 1= very weeker) (CIP, 2007) and yield attributes was collected from 10 randomly selected plants. Potato was harvested on February 20 and 21, 2008. All the data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield and income might be increased through at least 10% less application as USG which can combat the increased price of N-fertilizer and the nation can save 10% fertilizer in potato production.
