Adoption of Improved Tomato Varieties by the Farmers of Jessore District in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to determine the extent of adoption of improved tomato varieties and to explore their relationship with selected characteristics of tomato growers. Data were collected from two villages of Bagherpara upazila under Jessore district during August to September, 2007. Correlation analysis showed that the level of education, farm size, annual income, training experience, extension media contact, and agricultural knowledge of the growers had significant and positive relationship with the adoption of improved tomato varieties: About 72 per cent of the growers' had low adoption while 18.6 and 9.3 per cent had medium and high adoption of improved tomato varieties respectively. Attack of insect, pest and diseases, lack of suitable land and dearth of cash money were identified as the constraints of adoption of improved tomato varieties.

Objectives:

i. To find out the extent of adoption of improved tomato varieties by the farmers.

ii. To identify the problems faced by the tomato growers in respect of adoption

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two villages namely, Dadpur and Balarampur of Bagherpara upazila under Jessore district. These two villages were selected purposively based on the higher concentration of tomato growers. At first, a list of tomato growers was collected from the study area with the help of village leaders and concerned officials. From this list, 43 percent of the populations of village were randomly selected as representative sample. Thus the sample size was 86. Data were collected with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaires. The questionnaire contained both open and close ended questions. Data were collected through face to face interview during the period from August to September, 2007. The collected data were summarized, edited and analyzed to attain the objective set for the study. Both tabular and statistical analysis were done to complete the study. In order to estimate the level of adoption of tomato varieties a adoption index was computed. It was measured on the basis of the extent of adoption of selected modern agricultural technologies by the farmer for a period of three years (2004, 2005 and 2006). The overall adoption index in this study was computed by using the following formula: Adoption index = (Σel p)X 100. Where, Σ = Summation of e/p, e = Extent (i.e. actual adoption) of adoption of improved tomato varieties in a particular land in particular year. p = Potentiality (i.e. possible adoption) of adoption of improved tomato varieties in a particular land in particular year.Ps = Period under study of improved tomato cultivation. The adoption index was expressed in percentage. Hence, the adoption of improved tomato variety index of a farmer could range from 0 to 100, where, '0' indicates no adoption and '100' indicated highest adoption. The adoption was categorized as low (up to 20), medium (21-40) and high (above 40) following adoption index. In order to explore the relationship of the selected characteristics of the farmers with their adoption, the Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient was computed. Here, adoption of improved tomato varieties was the dependent variable and the selected characteristics of the respondent farmers constituted the independent variables. The selected characteristics included were farmer's age, farmer's education, family size, occupation, farm size, annual family income, organizational participation, training exposure, extension media contact, innovative ness and agricultural knowledge.

About 72 per cent of the growers had low adoption while 18.6 and 9.3 per cent had medium and high adoption of improved tomato varieties respectively. Most of the selected characteristics had positive and significant relationship with the adoption of tomato varieties. The relationship between the adoption of tomato varieties and age was found negative i.e. aged farmers were reluctant to adopt modern tomato varieties. Farmers in the study area also faced considerable problems in the cultivation of improved tomato varieties. Further, research initiative should be undertaken to solve the problems of pest and diseases.
