An inter cropping experiment was conducted in the farmer’s field at Multi-Location Testing (MLT) site, Melandah during rabi season 2013-14 to observe the productivity and economic profitability of sweet potato+ lentil, sweet potato+ linseed, sweet potato+ coriander inter cropping systems against sole sweet potato. The result indicated that root yield of sweet potato was reduced due to inter cropping systems. The highest root yield of sweet potato was found from sole sweet potato (24.00 t/ha) and lowest (15.50 t/ha) when it was grown with coriander. The highest sweet potato equivalent yield was obtained from sweet potato+ lentil inter cropping systems (27.15 t/ha) which gave 13.13% yield advantage over sole sole sweet potato. The gross return (1,63,020 Tk/ha) as well as benefit cost ratio (3.67) was also found highest from sweet potato+lentil inter cropping

To find out the suitable inter crop system of sweet potato with lentil, linseed and coriander for higher yield and economic return.

The experiment was conducted at the Multi-Location Testing (MLT) site, Melandah, Jamalpur during the rabi season of 2013-14. The experiment consisted of four treatments, viz. i) sweet potato+lentil ii) sweet potato+linseed iii) sweet potato+coriander and iv) sweet potato sole. The treatments were tested in randomized complete block design with six replications. The unit plot size was 5 m × 4m. The variety JSP 1, BARI Mosur-7, local and BARI Dhonia-1 were used for sweet potato, lentil, linseed and coriander, respectively. All inter crops seeds were sown in broadcast maintaining 20% seed ratio the respective crops. Sweet potato vines were planted in a planting configuration of 60cm × 30cm spacing. The crop was fertilized with 70-25-85 kg/ha NPK and 8 t/ha cowdung, respectively. Half of N and all other fertilizers were applied at final land preparation. Remaining N was top dressed in two equal splits at 15 and 35 DAT. The vines of sweet potato and seeds of lentil, linseed and coriander were planted on November 9, 2013. One hand weeding was done at 15 DAT. Intercrop were harvested depending on the maturity of the individual crops ranging from March 9-23, 2014. Finally sweet potato was harvested on April 26-28, 2014. Equivalent yield of component crops were determined following the method of Anjaneyulu et al. (1982) as mentioned below: Sweet potato Equivalent Yield (SEY) =Ys+Yi X Pi Ps Where, Ys = Yield of sweet potato (t/ha) Yi = Yield of intercrops (t/ha) Pi = Price of intercrops (Tk/ha) Ps = Price of sweet potato (Tk/ha) Data recorded on the different parameters were analysed and means were separated as per DMRT test.

The result indicated that all the yield attributes were influenced due to inter cropping of sweet potato with lentil, linseed and coriander. The longest sweet potato plant (103.43 cm) was recorded from sweet potato+lentil treatment and the shortest plant (54.10 cm) was recorded from sweet potato+linseed treatment. The highest branches/plant (10.13) was observed from sole sweet potato and the lowest branches/plant (8.13) was achieved from sweet potato+coriander inter cropping system. Similar trend was observed incase of roots/plant. The highest root wt/plant (439.43 g) was found from sweet potato+lentil inter cropping system and the lowest root wt/plant (280.25g) was noticed from sweet potato+coriander inter cropping system. The highest root yield (24.00 t/ha) was found from sole sweet potato and the lowest yield (15.50 t/ha) was noticed from sweet potato+coriander inter cropping system. The highest sweet potato equivalent yield (27.15 t/ha) was produced by sweet potato+lentil treatment. The lowest sweet potato equivalent yield (19.67 t/ha) was noticed from sweet potato+coriander treatment. The highest gross return (Tk.1,63,020/ha)was found from sweet potato+lentil inter cropping. The lowest gross return (Tk.1,18,020/ha) was recorded from sweet potato+coriander treatment.
