The relay cropping experiment (viz. T1= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×1.5m, T2= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×1.5m, T3= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×2m, T4= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×2m, T5= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×2.5m, T6= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×2.5m, T7= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×3m, T8= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×3m, T9= Sole brinjal (Local) 100cm×75cm) was conducted in the farmer’s field of Multi-Location Testing (MLT) site, Melandah during rabi season 2013-14 to observe the productivity and economic feasibility of Brinjal/sweet gourd relay cropping systems. The result indicated that fruit yield of brinjal was reduced due to relay cropping systems. The highest fruit yield of brinjal was found from sole brinjal (27.71 t/ha) and lowest fruit yield (19.30 t/ha) was found when it was grown with brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (Local) 2m×1.5m. The highest brinjal equivalent yield (41.19 t/ha) was obtained from brinjal(100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×2.5m relay cropping systems which gave 48.65% higher yield advantage over sole brinjal. The gross return (617850 Tk/ha) as well as benefit cost ratio (4.28) was found highest from brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×2.5m intercropping system.

To find out the suitable relay cropping system of brinjal with sweet gourd for higher yield and economic return

The experiment was conducted at the Multi-Location Testing (MLT) site, Melandah, Jamalpur during the rabi season 2013-14. The experiment consisted of nine treatmernts, viz. T1= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×1.5m, T2= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×1.5m, T3= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×2m, T4= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×2m, T5= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×2.5m, T6= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×2.5m, T7= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (local) 2m×3m, T8= Brinjal (100%)/sweet gourd (BARI Mistikumra-2) 2m×3m, T9= Sole brinjal (Local) 100cm×75cm. The treatments were tested in randomized complete block design with six replications. The unit plot size was 10 m × 2m. The local variety (Bottle Begun) for brinjal and BARI Mistikumra-2 and local variety used for sweet gourd. Sweet gourd was sown in lines in between the brinjal rows maintaining the spacing of the respective treatments. The crop was fertilized with for sole brinjal and relay system: N173, P35, K125, S19 kg/ha and 10 t/ha CD. For sole sweet gourd: N81, P35, K75, S19, Zn4.36, B1.8 kg/ha along with MgO75 g/ha and 10 t/ha CD. For sole brinjal 138kg N, half potassium, all phosphorus and cowdung were applied at final land preparation. Remaining nitrogen was applied at 15, 50, 90 DAT and remaining potassium was applied at 15 and 50 DAT, respectively. For sole sweet gourd half phosphorus, 1/3rd potassium, 1/3rd cowdung and entire amount of gypsum, Zinc and Borax were applied at final land preparation. Remaining phosphorus, 1/3rd potassium and entire amount of MgO was applied in pit. Nitrogen was applied at 10, 30, 50, 70 DAP and remaining 1/3rd potassium was applied at 10 DAP, respectively. Brinjal seedlings were planted on September ,2013 and sweet gourd was planted on November 17-19, 2014. For brinjal two hand weeding was done at 15 and 30 DAT and for sweet gourd two hand weeding was done at 20 and 40 DAT. Brinjal was harvested on 6 November 2013 to January 18, 2014 and sweet gourd harvested on February 22 to April 22, 2014.

Equivalent yield of component crops were determined following the method of Anjaneyulu et al. (1982) as mentioned

Brinjal Equivalent Yield (BEY) =Yb+Yi X Pi

                                                               Pb

Where,

Yb = Yield of brinjal (t/ha)

Yi   = Yield of intercrop vegetable (t/ha)

Pi    = Price of intercrop vegetables (Tk/ha)

Pb = Price of brinjal (Tk/ha)

Data recorded on the different parameters were analysed and means

The result indicated that all the yield attributes were influenced due to relay cropping of brinjal with sweet gourd. Plant height and fruits/plant were found insignificant. The highest individual fruit weight (149.25 g) was recorded from T9 (Sole brinjal) treatment and it was statistically at par to T8 and T4 treatment and the lowest individual plant weight (132.75 g) was recorded from T1 treatment. The highest fruit weight/plant (584.55 g) was observed from brinjal sole treatment and it was statistically identical to T4, T6 and T8 treatment. The lowest fruit weight/plant (465.67 g) was achieved from T1 treatment. The highest fruit yield (27.71 t/ha) was found from sole brinjal treatment and the lowest fruit yield (19.30 t/ha) was noticed from T1 treatment and it was statistically similar to T6 and T8 treatment. The lowest fruit yield (19.30 t/ha) was found from sole brinjal treatment. The highest brinjal equivalent yield (41.19 t/ha) was produced by T6 treatment and the lowest brinjal equivalent yield (24.1 t/ha) was noticed from T1 treatment. The highest gross return (Tk. 6,17,850/ha) was found from T6 treatment and the lowest gross return (Tk. 3,61500/ha) was recorded from T1 treatment. The total cost was found highest (1,42,480 Tk./ha) in brinjal/sweet gourd relay inter cropping systems. The lowest total cost was found from brinjal sole treatment. The highest gross margin (Tk. 4,73,370/ha) was found from T6 treatment and the lowest gross margin (Tk. 2,17,020/ha) was recorded from T1 treatment. However, the highest benefit cost ratio (4.28) was found highest in T6 treatment and the lowest benefit cost ratio (2.50) was observed from T1 treatment
