Assessment of the Pest Status and Seasonal Fluctuation of Major Insect Pests of Some Selected Vegetables and Fruits

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at RARS, Jamalpur to assess the present pest status and seasonal fluctuation of major insect pests of some vegetables and fruits. The major insect pests of some selected vegetables and fruits were weekly monitored. Results showed that maximum aphid population in brinjal and tomato was recorded in the last week of December. It is to be noted here that, the winged aphid population was always higher than the wingless aphid. White fly and Jassid population was higher in brinjal than the other winter vegetables. Insect pest surveillance of potato cutworm, Brinjal Shoot and Fruit Borer, Diamond Back Moth, Cucurbit fruit fly, Spodoptera, Helicoverpa and Sweet Potato Weevil showed that catching of adult moth through trapping was always higher in crop zone area than the non crop zone area.

Objectives:

To assess the present pest status and seasonal fluctuation of major insect pests of some vegetables and fruits

Methodology:

Pest status and seasonal fluctuation of major insect pests of some major vegetables and fruits were monitored at RARS, Jamalpur through in-situ observation and pheromone trapping. In-situ field inspection and collection of adult moths from traps were made at weekly interval. The number of immature and mature population of sucking insect pests (whitefly, aphids and Jassids) were observed visually and recorded. The whole plant was observed from bottom to top and both sides (first upper and after that lower side) of the plant leaves. The insect population was carefully counted with the help of 5x magnifier lens. The number of adult moth captured/trap/week were also recorded from the traps. The data were calculated from 3 replications and were presented in the graphs

Achievement/Findings:

Results showed that maximum aphids were recorded in tomato and white fly was in the brinjal in the last week of December. It is to be noted that the winged aphid population was higher than the wingless aphid. The jassid and whitefly population was always higher in brinjal than the other winter vegetables . On the other hand, in case of tomato the whitefly population was lower than the jassid and aphid population . Insect pest surveillance through pheromone traps showed that catching of adult moths was always higher in crop zone area than the non-crop zone area . Maximum fruit fly population was recorded in the last week of March, where sweet potato weevil was maximum in the last week of January and it was around 300/trap/week.
