Efficacy of Seed Treatment with Nematicides Against Root-knot of Bottle Gourd and Its Yield Loss Due to the Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiments were conducted during 1993-94 and repeated 1994-95 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore of BARI. Five nematicides namely, Agridhan 3G, Furadan 5G, Miral 3G, Rugby lOG and Sunfuran 3G were evaluated to control root-knot of bottle gourd caused by Meloidogyne incognita. Seeds were treated in 1000 ppm suspension of nematicides. Of them Rugby lOG appeared best in controlling root-knot followed by M iral 3G. Furadan 5G, Sunfuran 3G, and Agridhan 3G. The estimated yield loss in bottle gourd due to infection of M. incognita was found to be 26.44 %.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of seed treatment with some nematicides.

2. To estimate the yield loss in bottle gourd due to infection of M incognita.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted during 1993-94, and repeated 1994-95. Seeds of bottle gourd were treated with suspension of five nematicides namely, Agridhan 3G, Furadan 5G, Rugby 10G and Sunfuran 3G (Curbofuran), and Miral 3G (Isazofos). Suspension of the nernaticides were prepared in water at 1000 ppm. The soil of the experiment was sterilized by heat (sawdust burning) and poured into earthen pots (30 cm). For each treatment four pots were used. Infected roots of Indian spinach were chopped into small pieces and incorporated in pot soil at the rate of 2 g per pot for inoculation. Fifty seeds of bottle gourd were soaked in nematicidal suspension for 48 hours. In control treatment seeds were soaked in plain water. Treated seeds were sown and the pots were arranged at the pot yard following completely randomized design. After germination the plants seedlings were thin to retain six plants per pot. Forty five days after germination the plants were uprooted. Root systems were washed with running tap water and indexed for severity of root-knot using 0-10 scale. Data on fresh weight of root and shoot and shoot height were also recorded and analyzed statistically following Completely Randomized Design.An experiment was conducted during 1994-95 crop season with two treatments viz. treated and untreated, following the pair plot technique. In one treatment, the pit soils were treated with Furadan-5G at the rate of 15G per pit to keep plants free from root-knot nematode infection while in untreated treatment, the pit was prepared by mixing infested soil collected from sick plot of M incognita where inoculum concentration was 2000 infective larvae per kilogram of soil. Seeds were sown in pits and after germination the seedlings were thinned to retain two plants per pot. Data on number of female flowers and fruit yield per pit were recorded. The loss in yield due to root-knot was calculated by using the standard formula. Data were analyzed statistically using paired "t' test.

Achievement/Findings:

In the present study all nematicides were found more or less effective in controlling root-knot and increase in root and shoot growth of bottle gourd plants. Of them Rugby 10G appeared to be the best. Miral 3G ranked next to Rugby 10G. The seed treating properties of Miral 3G against ufra disease (Ditylenchus angustus) had been advocated. The results indicated that, Furadan 5G, Sunfuran 3G and Agridhan 3G were effective as seed treating nematicides against M. incognita.
