Field trial to evaluate the efficacy of  some chemical insecticides for the management of mango hoppers (Idioscopus spp.) was done during the mango season 2014 at Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), BARl, Gazipur, Bangladesh. Four insecticides, namely imidacloprid (Confidor) 70WG, lambda cyhalothrin (Karate) 2.5 EC, thiamethoxam (Actara) 25WG and cypermethrin (Ripcord) 10EC were evaluated at pre-determined doses. The fungicide, mancozeb (Indofil M 45) was added in all the treatments (except control) during spray applications. Two sprayings, the first within 10 days oj flowering and the second at pea stage oj the fruit growth (after 35 days oj the first spray application) were done. Results indicated that all the tested insecticides (except Actara 25 WG) were very much effective in reducing adult and nymph oj mango hoppers. In respect oj increased percentage oj fruit retention, insecticidal treatments are arranged from higher to lower efficacy as: Confidor 70 WG > Ripcord 10 EC > Karate 2.5 EC > Actara 25 WG

To find out the most suitable insecticide(s) for the control of mango hoppers.

The trials were conducted at the mango orchard of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), BARI, Gazipur, Bangladesh during 2014 mango season in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 5 treatments and 3 replications. One mango tree was considered as one replication of a treatment. Around 7 years' old mango trees of BARI Aam 4 variety were used in these treatments. Each treatment was applied twice as a full cover spray on mango trees from the ground with the help of a high volume and high pressure power sprayer, the first application within 10 days of flowering and the second at pea stage of the fruit growth (after 35 days of the first application). Each insecticide was used at a pre-determined single dose. The treatments were: T I = Imidacloprid (Confidor 70WG) @ 0.2g/litre of water, T2 = Lambda cyhalothrin (Karate 2.5 EC) @ 1.0ml/litre of water, T3 = Thiamethoxam (Actara 25WG) @ 5.0g/100 litres of water, T4 = Cypermethrin (Ripcord lOEC) @ l.Oml/litre of water, and T5 = Untreated control with water spray only. The fungicide, mancozeb (Indofil M 45) @ 2.0g/litre of water was added in all the treatments during spray applications. The adult mango hoppers were collected from each tree of different treatments 1 day before (lOBS), and 7,14, and 21 days after each spraying (DAS) with the help ofa one meter long nylon sweeping net having 30 em rim diameter and a handle of 100 ern. Each mango tree was visually divided into 4 quadrants and mango hoppers were collected from each quadrant of the trunk by up-down and down-up movements of a single continuous sweep of the net, and from the leaves of each quadrant at the drip line by the up-down, down-up, left to right and right to left movements of a single continuous sweep of the net from standing position on the ground. Collected mango hoppers were kept in properly labeled polyethylene bags and were counted later on in the laboratory. Five inflorescences were randomly selected in each tree of a treatment on each date of data collection for counting the mango hopper nymphs in-situ. At full flowering, 20 inflorescences were randomly selected and tagged from 4 quadrants (5 inflorescences from each quadrant) of each tree of a treatment. The number of mango fruits from tagged inflorescences were counted and recorded at pea, marble and mature stages of fruit growth after 35, 56, and 117 days, respectively of the first spray application.

All the insecticidal treatments showed 100%, 96.5 to 100%, 87.9 to 100% and 81 to 90.4% reductions of the mango hopper nymph populations over their pre-treatment population levels in the inflorescences after 7, 14,21, and 28 days of their spray application, respectively. The insecticidal treatments showed 158 to 227% increased fruit retention over the untreated control at mature stages of the fruit growth. In respect of increased percentage of fruit retention, insecticidal treatments are arranged from higher to lower efficacy as: Confidor 70 WG > Ripcord 10 EC> Karate 2.5 EC > Actara 25 WG.
