Management of Banana Leaf and Fruit Beetle with Nylon Netting and Polyethylene Bagging at Farmers' Field

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Shibganj, Bogra 2013-14 to reduce banana leaf and fruit beetle infestation at farmers' field condition. Three treatments viz: (T_l) Banana bunch covered with nylon net (54 inch long and 36 inch wide), (T₁₎ Banana bunch covered with polyethylene bag (54 inch long and 36 inch wide) and (T₃) Farmers practice (with insecticide) was considered in this regard. The lowest infestation (2.26%) was obtained from T, which was statistically similar with T₂ and the highest in T₁. The treatment T₁ and T₂provided the highest gross margin over T₁• Among the treatments netting was better than polythene.

Objectives:

To reduce banana leaf and fruit beetle infestation by netting/polyethylene bagging and to produce safe banana by reducing insecticide use

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site Shibganj, Bogra during 2013-14 to reduce banana leaf and fruit beetle infestation. It was laid out in RCB design with six replications. There were three treatments viz. (i) Banana bunch covered with nyolon net (54 inch long and 36 inch wide), (ii) Banana bunch covered with polyethylene bagging (54 inch long and 36 inch wide) and (iii) Fanners practice (with insecticide; Sevin 85SP 5 times @ 2g/1 of water). The unit plot size was 8m x 4m. Eight plants were considered per treatment. Suckers (variety Rangin Maher Sagar) were planted on 18 October, 2012. The banana bunches were covered with nets/polythene bags during 6 June-3 July 2013 irrespective of farmers and as per growth and development of bunch. Recommended fertilizer doses were used to grow the crop. Weeding, mulching, irrigation and removal of dried leaves were done as and when necessary. In polythene bag treatment, bags were checked to remove moisture from the bag. The crop was harvested treatment wise during 2 September-3 October 2013. The data on date of maturity, number of fresh and infested fruits per bunch, and market value were recorded from all the 8 plants in each plot and were analyzed statistically . The cost and returns were also calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

From the experiment it was observed that both netting and polythene bagging had statistically similar lowest infestation and offered higher yield and gross margin over farmers practice. But netting is better than polythene because polythene bagging treatment needed extra care, moisture trapped in the polythene bags may damages and/or promotes fungal and bacterial growth. For proper aeration within the bunch netting is better than polythene.
