Susceptibility of Different Varieties of Litchi to Litchi Mite (aceria Litchi Keifer) and Its Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were conducted in the Litchi orchard of Fruit Research Station, BARl, Binodpur, Rajshahi during 2013-14 to determine the suceptibility of different varieties of litchi to litchi mite and to develop a suitable management approach against this pest. The highest leaf infestation (13.77%) by mites was recorded in Bombai litchi which was statistically identical to Green, BAU litchi-l, BARl litchi-I, Bedena and China-3; While the lowest leaf infestation (3.04%) was found in Dinajpuri. Management approach comprising of pruning of infested foliage twice + one spray of Abamectin 1.8 EC (Vertimec 1.8 EC) @ 1.5ml /liter of water appeared to be best offering 87.51% leaf infestation reduction over control.

Objectives:

To determine the susceptibility of different varieties of litchi to litchi mite and to develop a suitable management approach against the pest.

Methodology:

The field experiment were conducted to study the varietal susceptibility of litchi to litchi mite (Aceria litchi K) and develop its management approach in the orchard of Fruit Research Station, BARI, Binodpur, Rajshahi during 2013-14. Leaves of six varieties of litchi viz. Bombai, BARI litchi-I, China-3, Bedena, Dinajpuri, Mojaffarpuri, Green, Madrajee and BAU litchi-I were examined to record the infestation of litchi mite. The experiments were conducted in Randomize Complete Block Design (RCBD) with nine varieties as treatments with three replications, one tree being a replicate. A seperate field experiment was conducted on litchi variety of Bombai to evaluate the various treatments for management of litchi mite .There were five treatments viz. T_I= Two pruning of infested foliage 15t on June after harvesting fruits and 2^nd on August + Spraying of Abamectin 1.8 EC (Vertimec 1.8 EC @ 1.5 ml /1 of water in February before opening flower) T₂= Two pruning of infested foliage 15t on June after harvesting fruits and 2^nd on August + Spraying of wettable Sulphur (Thiovit 80 WP @ 2 g/l of water in February before opening flower) T₃= Two pruning of infested foliage 15t on June after harvesting fruits and 2nd on August + Spraying of Dimethoate 40 EC (Tafgor 40 EC @ 2 mill of water in February before opening flower) T₄ = Two pruning of infested foliage 15t on june after harvesting fruits and 2nd on August, T₅ =Untreated control. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Single tree was considered as an experimental unit, all of the trees were of same age. Sprays were done using power sprayer. From each tree five small branch was selected, from the branch all terminal shoots were observed and no. of infested leaves and no. of infested inflorescence were counted. The per cent infestation data were transformed by arcsin transformation method.

Achievement/Findings:

The lowest leaf infestation (4.31 %) was observed from T_I which differed statistically from other treatments and the highest leaf infestation (34.51 %) was observed from T₅ (Untreated control). In case of per cent infested inflorescence the lowest infested inflorescence (2.21 %) was also observed from T_I which was followed by T₂ (3.0 I %) and T₃ (3.11 %). The highest per cent infested inflorescence was observed from control (9.11 %) which differed significantly from other treatments. The highest reduction of leaf and inflorescence infestation over control(87.51% and 75.74%, respectively) was recorded in T_I treated plants.
