The present study was undertaken to detect and quantify the left over residue of five commonly used insecticides (DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endrin and Heptachlor) in five types of dry fish samples like Loitta, Kanchki, Mola, Paysha & Chepa. These samples were collected from nine region of Bangladesh like Chittagong, Khagrachori, Rangpur, Bogra, Dinajpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Mymensingh & Lalmonirhat for the comparison between the detected residue level with maximum residue level (MRL) set by Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicins Authirity. Total forty three (43) samples of dry fish were collected and analyzed for the quantification of insecticide residues. Among them, thirty two (32) samples contained detectable residue. Twenty two (22) dry fish contained residue in above MRL. Six (6) samples contained multi residue, twenty six (26) samples contained single residue. The values of Aldrin were detected from 25 samples ranged O.008ppm- 2. 225ppm, 15 of those were in above MRL. In case of Dieldrin, 3 samples residue ranged 0.31ppm- 1.7ppm, all of those were in above MRL. Residue of DDTwere detected in O.058ppm-l. 79ppmfrom 11 samples, 9 of those were in above MRL. Residue of all dry fish collected from Chittagong & khagrachori were in above MRL. Highest residue of pesticide i. e.Aldrin was detected in Paysha dry fish of Rangpur (2.225 ppm).

To detect and quantify the amount of leftover residue of insecticide in different dry fish samples collected from different local market of Bangladesh

Five types of dry fish samples like Loitta, Kanchki, Mola, Paysha & Chepa were collected from nine region of Bangladesh like Chittagong, Khagrachori, Rangpur, Bogra, Dinajpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Mymensingh & Lalmonirhat. Collected dry fish analyzed for the quantification of insecticide residues. The standard for DOT, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endrin and Heptachlor were obtained from Suppliers. Standards of all the pesticides contained >99.6% purity. Extraction and separation: The collected dry fish samples (250g) were cut down into small pices by knife. A sub sample of 20g was taken into a wide mouth jar then 100 ml of hexane was added to it. Anhydrous sodium sulphate (Na2S04) was also added with sample until water was removed from the sample. The mixture was then macerated with high-speed homogenizer (Ultraturax, lKA TI8 basic, Germany) for 2 minutes. The homogenized material were then poured into 250 ml conical flask and placed into shaker (Orbital Shaking Incubator, Rexmed, Sweden) for 12hrs continuous shaking. After shaking, the slurry was filtered through a Buchner funnel with suction. The flask and filter cakes were rinsed with 25ml of hexane each. The filtrate was then transferred into 250ml round bottom flask and was dried to 3-5ml by evaporation using a rotary vacuum evaporator (Laborota-400 I, Heidolph, Germany). The concentrated filtrate was then transferred into volumetric flask making lOml in volume. For colour removal, around 20ml methanol was added with l Oml filtrate and shaked vigorously for 3-5 minutes. After shaking, the separatory funnel was set on stand and kept undisturbed for 3-5 minutes. Then the clear part of the solution from the bottom of the separatory funnel was collected in vial which was then centrifuged at 1200rpm for 5minutes (Laboratory Centrifuges, Sigma-3K30, Germany). After centrifuge, supernatant was collected for injection. Before injection, this volume was again cleaned up by High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) filter (0.2 PTFE) which was ready for injection. Detection and quantification of insecticide residue in samples: The concentrated extracts were subjected to analysis by GC-20 I 0 (Shimadzu) with Electron Capture Detector (ECD) to detect DOT, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endrin and Heptachlor. The capillary column used was AT -1, length 30m, ID O.25mm and film thickness O.251lm in case of ECD detector. Nitrogen was used as carrier and make up gas in ECD.

Dry fish samples from different markets were found to be contaminated with different concentrations of Aldrin, DDT & Dieldrin residues indicating unrestricted and unplanned use of organochlorin pesticide for controlling infestation during processing and storage.
