In Bangladesh, Indian olive is not commercially cultivated, but is found in many of the homesteads in villages. It has some export potential, but commercial cultivation is sluggish because of the lack of superior recommended variety. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to find out superior genotype(s) of this fruit at Citrus Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Jaintiapur, Sylhet, Bangladesh with thirteen local Indian olive genotypes during February 20 13 to February 2014. Each plant was nourished with 30 kg cow dung, 500 g N, 350 g P, 400 g K, 120 g S, 10 g Zn and 5 B respectively. Data were recorded on growth, yield and qualitative fruit characters. There were differences among the genotypes regarding plant height, base girth, spreading and tree volume (m3) growth, yield and yield contributing characters. Tallest plant was found in case of EF Jai-024 (4.5 m) but EF Jai-002 was superior with widest canopy spreading whereas tree volume was highest in case of EF Jai-004. Maximum number of fruit was obtained from EF Jai-023 (3081) but per plant yield and per hectare yield was obtained from EF Jai-021 (70 kg per plant and 14.735 ton per hectare respectively). Maximum individual fruit weight was obtained from EF Jai-025 (49.0 g) with larger fruit size (5.97x4.37 cm). There were variations among the quantitative fruit characters also. Therefore, genotype EF Jai-021, that showed excellent capacity of yield comparing to others, may be promoted for commercial cultivation under the north eastern region of Bangladesh.

To find out superior genotype(s)  of Indian Olive

The experiment was conducted at Citrus Research Station of  the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jaintiapur, Sylhet (25.13562 ° N latitude, 92.13217 ° E longitude, 36m of elevation from mean sea level), during February 2013 to February 2014. Thirteen Indian olive genotypes were included in the study. These plants were of ten years age having uniform growth planted with 8x8 m spacing in the year of 2005. The climatic condition of the experimental location was subtropical in nature, which is characterized with the pre monsoon (March to April), the monsoon (May to September) and the winter or dry season (November to February). Annual average rainfall ranges from 4500-6000 mm, the mean maximum and minimum temperatures are 36°C and 6°C in the month of April- January respectively. The soil of the experimental plot belongs to northern and eastern hills (AEZ 29 of Bangladesh) having sandy loam textured soil. Each plant was nourished with 30 kg cow dung, 500 g N, 350 g P, 400 g K, 120 g S, 10 g Zn and 5 B respectively. Dolomite (agricultural lime) 4 kg/decimal was applied for managing soil pH. Full quantity of cow dung was applied to all the plants after harvest during November along with complete dose of phosphorus, sulfur and half of potassium. Nitrogen and other half of potassium were applied in two equal installments during August and February. Nutrients N, P, K and S were applied to the plant as urea, triple super-phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum respectively. Fertilizers were applied radialy 45 cm away from trunk and light spading was performed for mixing the fertilizers with the soil properly. The plants were infested some insects and controlled by spraying imidachloprid. No plant disease was observed during the fruiting period. Data were recorded on growth parameters viz. percent growth in plant height, base girth, canopy spreading, plant volume (m3) , fruits per plant, yield per plant (kg) and yield (t/ha). Following castle, through minor amendment canopy volume were calculated via the formula V (m3) = π /6x H xD2 where, V was plant volume, H was plant height and D was the average value of north-south and east-west spreading of the canopy. Yield (kg/plant) was recorded at the time of harvest. Ten fruits from each plant were harvested randomly for taking quantitative and qualitative data of fruits viz. individual fruit weigh (g), Fruit size (length and breadth at equatorial region in cm), stone weight (g), stone size (length and breadth at equatorial region in cm), Flesh weight (g), flesh thickness (cm), edible portion (%), fruit shape and colour, flesh colour and texture. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with different treatment combinations being replicated. The recorded replicated data on different parameters were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C programme and Duncan's Multiple Range Test was performed for mean separations of the studied parameters and interpretation of results.

The Indian olive genotypes varied greatly in major growth characters, yield and its quality under hot and humid condition of north eastern region of Bangladesh. EF Jai-021 showed excellent yield performance compared to others. Beside this, CC Jai-022 and CC Jai-023 also had produced higher yield. Although CC Jai-025 was not a high yielder but it’s fruit size was quite large which might attract the consumer. It could be concluded that, commercial Indian olive cultivation might be promoted and these genotypes could be recommended for the north eastern region of Bangladesh.
