The experiment was conducted at the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, during October 2009–April 2010 to identify effective fungicides to control radial mycelial growth of Stemphylium sarciniformis of lentil. Seven fungicides with a control were used as treatments. The fungicides were Rovral 50 WP, Indofil M-45, Tilt 250 EC, Bavistin 50 WP, Score, Companion and Ridomil (0.2%). All fungicides showed better performance compared to the control in the laboratory. The lowest (0.00) radial mycelial growth of Stemphylium sarciniformis was recorded in Tilt 250 EC (0.05%), Bavistin DF (0.1%) and Companion (0.2%) at 3, 6, 9 and 12 days after inoculation. Score 250 EC (0.1%) also showed better performance. In the field experiment, all the fungicides were effective in the management of stemphylium blight disease of lentil. Companion induced resistant reaction with the highest yield of 1377 kg/ha, followed by Bavistin with 1208 kg/ha. Ridomil Gold was least effective in controlling stemphylium blight of lentil whereas Tilt 250 EC showed intermediate reaction in checking this disease. Performance of the recommended fungicide (Rovral 50 WP) was not as good compared to other fungicides both in the laboratory and field conditions.

To find out the effective fungicide(s) in controlling stemphylium blight of lentil in vitro and in vivo.

 

The experiments were conducted in the laboratory and field of the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh, during October 2009–April 2010. The experiments were carried out in completely randomized design (CRD) in laboratory and randomized complete block design (RCBD) in the field with four replications. Seven fungicides and one control were used for both the experiments. The fungicides tested were Rovral 50 WP (0.2%), Indofil M-45 (0.2%), Tilt 250 EC (0.05%), Bavistin 50 WP (0.1%), Score (0.1%), Companion (0.2%), and Ridomil (0.2%). The pure culture of the pathogen was preserved in PDA slants at 5 ± 10C in refrigerator as stock culture for future use. One hundred ml PDA was taken in 250 ml conical flasks for each fungicide. Each conical flask was sterilized with PDA. Then every fungicide was mixed with PDA in the conical flask before pouring into Petri dishes. One hundred ml of the chemical mixed PDA from each conical flask was poured into four Petri dishes. The mycelial block of Stemphylium sarciniformis was placed at the centre of the chemical mixed PDA in Petri dishes. The inoculated Petri dishes were placed in incubator at 23 ± 10C for 15 days. Data on radial mycelial growth was recorded 3, 6, 9 and 12 days after inoculation (DAI). A susceptible crop variety (BARI Masur-1) was used. Germination test of the lentil seeds was conducted before sowing in the Plant Pathology Division, PRC, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh. Furrows were made with tractor driven furrow maintaining a distance of 40 cm between rows. The row length was 4 m with continuous sowing of seed. The seeds were sown in the morning of November 15, 2009. The experiment was monitored regularly to observe the onset of stemphylium blight disease. Plant debris was applied in this nursery at the flowering stage to create high disease pressure. Spraying of fungicides was started when the disease appeared. Total three sprays were applied at intervals of 10 days with the help of a Knapsack hand sprayer using 1.5 liters of fungicide solution in each plot. Interculture operations were done in order to maintain normal hygienic condition of the crop. The crop was harvested when fully matured. Before total harvesting, 10 plants were picked up randomly from each plot for recording observations and collecting seeds. Data were recorded on days to maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, incidence of stemphylium blight on 0– 5 scale, and grain yield. The severity of stemphylium blight was recorded 70, 80 and 90 days after sowing using the disease score of 0–5 scale. The data were analyzed statistically for calculating the mean disease score values and for test of significance.
