An investigation was carried out at the experimental field of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture during winter season from October 2015 to March 2016 with a view to evaluate the performance of seven promising tomato varieties under Sylhet condition in winter season. Three local tomato varieties viz., Raja, Maharaja, kanak two exotic varieties viz.,Nor-306, Nor-313 along with two BARI released varieties BARI Hybrid Tomato-5, BARI Tomato-15 were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Yield and yield attributes of seven varieties differed significantly. The highest harvesting period was observed in Maharaja (34.33 days). The lowest harvesting period was recorded in BARI Tamato-15 (26.67 days) but it was corresponding for earlier maturation (44.76 days from fruit set). The highest number of fruits plant-1was recorded from the variety Moharaja (42.30) with the lowest TSS (4.43%). The lowest number of fruits plant-1was recorded from BARI Tomato-15 (26.20). Wide variations were recorded for individual fruit weight among the varieties. Raja had the heaviest fruit weight (45.11 g fruit-1) closely followed by Kanak (45.10 g fruit-1). Fruit yield plant-1ranged 0.42 kg to 1.57 kg. Corresponding plant-1fruit yield was the highest for the Maharaja (1.57 kg) followed by Raja (1.40 kg) while lowest yield was in BARI Tomato-15 (0.42 kg). In respect of fruit yield hectare-1, the highest (60.08 t ha-1) was recorded from Moharaja followed by Raja (52.84 t ha-1) and the lowest yield was obtained in the BARI Tomato-15 which was 15.13 t ha-1. Considering the yield performance Moharaja, Raja, BARI Hybrid Tomato-5 were found most promising in Sylhet region for the production of tomato in winter season.

To find out the suitable varieties capable of growing with higher yield. Considering the above situations three local tomato varieties viz.,Raja, Moharaja, Kanak, two exotic varieties Nor-306, Nor-313 along with two BARI released varieties BARI Hybrid Tomato-5 and BARI Tomato-15 were used in the experiment. It is expected that the information gathered from the result of present experiment would help the growers of Sylhet region.

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Research Field of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), Sylhet, during the period of October 2015 to March 2016 with a view to evaluate the tomato varieties in Sylhet for winter season. Experimental field belongs to Eastern Surma-Kushiara Floodplain under the Agro Ecological Zone-20 (FAO, 1988). The soil of the experimental site was sandy loam in texture and highly acidic in nature containing the pH 4.98. The climate of the experimental area was subtropical in nature characterized by high temperature, heavy rainfall, and high humidity. Three local varieties viz.,Raja, Moharaja, Kanak and two exotic varieties Nor-306, Nor-313 along with two BARI released varieties BARI Hybrid Tomato-5 and BARI Tomato-15 were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. In field experiment, the unit plot size was 1.0 m x 4.0 m having double row per bed and 10 plants per row and 20 plants per plot. Plants were spaced at 60 cm × 40 cm between row to row and plant to plant, respectively. The following doses of fertilizers (Rashid and Singh, 2000) were applied in the experimental field. Half of the quantity of cowdung and the entire amount of TSP were applied during final land preparation. The remaining cowdung and half of MoP were applied 5 days before planting. The whole of urea and remaining half of MoP were applied in 3 equal splits as top dressing at 15, 30 and 50 days after transplanting. Twenty four days old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental field on 19 November2015. After transplanting of seedlings, weeding, staking, irrigation and other intercultural operations were accomplished for proper growth and development of the plants. Data were recorded from all experimental plants on different morphological parameters, yield and yield attributes. Parameters were analyzed using MSTAT software for analysis of variance.

The tomato genotypes Raja, Moharaja and BARI Hybrid Tomato-5 performed well as they had high fruit yield potentiality in winter season and can be taken for further evaluation and adaptation in Sylhet region.
