Aquaculture in the creek of Kaptai lake resulted in a higher individual bodyweight of Catla in T3R1 (393.5±31.62gm) compare to Rui in T1R2 (312.2±28.03gm) and Mrigal in T3R2 (284±15.42 gm)  in 210 days experiment. The highest specific growth rate (SGR) of Catla, Rui and Mrigal were found in T1R2 (1.14), T1R2 (1.65) and T3R2 (1.39) respectively. The survival rate of Rui in T2R2 was higher than T2R2 and T3R2. The highest average air and water temperature (26.3±2.40 oC and 25.1±2.35 oC) were recorded in T3R1 and T1C1 whereas the lowest average air and water temperature (24.5±2.2 oC and 24.1±2.34 oC) were recorded in T2R1 and T1R2. The PH of water was found to alkaline in nature (6.3±1.24 to 8.5±0.3) in nine creeks. The maximum average free CO2 value (8±1.22 mg/l) was recorded in T2R2 and the minimum (5±0.66 mg/l) in T3R2. The value of average total alkalinity was found to fluctuate from 51±7.44 mg/l in T3C3 to 63.4±6.35 mg/l in T3R2. Total hardness of lake water varied from 54±6.23  in T3C3 to 64.2±6.58) in T3R1 with regular trends in fluctuation. Mean secchi disc reading varied from 0.3±0.32 m in T1C1 to 0.5±0.36 m in T2R1. Dissolved oxygen was found to vary from 5.45±0.38 mg/l in T2R2 to 7±0.33 mg/l  in T3R1. The highest net production was found in T1R2 creeks (5760 kg/ha). T1R1 and T1R2 creeks yielded 5555 kg/ha and 5760 kg/ha increased production, respectively with a higher economic return over T1C1 treatment (3381kg/ha).

  1. To refine culture technology for sustainable fish production in creeks
  2. To identify problems regarding fish culture in creeks with their solution
  3. To dimonstrate this technology

The experiment was carried out in three different Upazila of Rangamati Hill District. In each Upazilla three creeks (average 1.acre)  were selected, among them one was treated as control. Creeks were selected by examining the creek site, soil type, water retention capacity, pollution-free and water depth (1m to 5m). Preparation of the creeks was done by repairing the mouth of the creeks (making a dam or construction of a pen or both). After two weeks, dirty materials were removed from the creeks bottom and lime (CaCO3) was applied at the rate of 250 kg ha-1. Then all concerned creeks were fertilized with compost (a mixture of chopped and sun-dried green plants-88%, cow dung-10%, urea-1% and lime-1%) 1,250 kg ha-1, urea 37.5 kg ha-1 and TSP 25 kg ha-1.  Good quality fingerling was collected from Cowkhali government hatchery and stocked at the rate of 60, 65 and 70 fingerlings per decimal. The Fingerling size was 7-10 cm.

In general growth performance of Catla was comparatively higher than Rui and Mrigal. Among the three treatments, T3R1 was the best stocking density considering the highest growth of the Catla in the creeks and T1R2 was the best stocking density considering the highest growth of the Rui in the creeks.A group of entrepreneurs living within the immediate vicinity of the creek, who have property rights (beneficiaries), were assigned for the overall management of the project. At least ten to fifteen beneficiaries were considered for a group selection including a team leader. Entrepreneurs were responsible for guarding, cleaning shoreline of creeks, administering feed as per requirement, taking part in fish harvesting.
