The present status of fish seed producing hatcheries of the Patuakhali Region, Southern Bangladesh was investigated during January to December, 2015. About 40% hatchery owners collected brood fish from the WorldFish Centre - an international nonprofit research organization, 20% from Halda river and Kuakata sea area and 10% from Padma and Meghna river. The hatcheries chosed Labeo rohita, Gebalion catla, Cirrhinus cirrhosis, Hypopthalmicthys molitrix, Cyprinus carpio Pangusius hypopthalmus and Oreochromis mossanbicus for induced breeding by using Pituitary Gland, Human Chorinic Gonadotrophin, Ovaprime, Ovitide, Ovaline, Flash and 17α-Methyltestosterone. Approximately, 80% hatcheries were free from deformities where 20% faced rickets, viral disease and some fungal diseases. The majority of the buyers (50%) were farmers where 30% were depot owners and 20% fry traders. The production of fish seeds was not sufficient than demand due to several problems. The ‘likert scale technique’ shown that the shortage of brood pond and money crisis was the critical problem in the study area, which creates insufficient brood stocking, which increases the chance of inbreeding. To improve management practices and regular replenishment of high-quality seed for broodstock, recommendations should be followed through participatory approaches with hatchery owners, farmers, traders, government agencies and NGOs.

Fish is considered as the essential food item for the people of Bangladesh and thus demand for fish is increasing with the increasing population of this country. Aquaculture mainly depends on the availability of fry and fingerlings. The peoples of Bangladesh are inclined to do aquaculture due to the higher export value of fish and fishery products, employment opportunities as well as to get cheaper protein for health and nutrition. Hatchery-produced seeds can fulfill this demand through the supply of seeds in any month of the year as aquaculture in the present time is fully dependent on them. But it has been claimed that the hatchery-produced fry are not of good quality. Considering this, the hatchery owners of Patuakhali district have always been trying to produce and supply good quality seeds. As there have been enormous prospects of fish seed-producing hatcheries in the Patuakhali district of Bangladesh to satisfy the demand of fish for increasing population, fish production should need to be enhanced through the cultivation of hatchery-produced fry in the water bodies following the appropriate research to protect commercially important as well as high-valued endangered fish species. In this way, not only the unemployment problems will be solved but also Bangladesh could be able to earn foreign exchange by exporting the hatchery-produced seeds to a greater extent.
