The length-weight relationships (LWRs) were studied for 814 individuals covering eight families and 12 species of fish, e.g., Botia dario, Botia lohachata, Channa orientalis, Esomus danricus, Heteropneustes fossilis, Macrognathus pancalus, Nandus nandus, Ompok pabda, Pethia phutunio, Pethia ticto, Trichogaster fasciata and Trichogaster laliuscap-tured from the Gajner beel floodplain, northwestern (NW) Bangladesh. Samples were collected occasionally from catches of fishermen from November 2014 to October 2015 using different types of traditional fishing gear, including gill net (mesh size ranges from 1.0 to 3.0 cm), cast net (mesh size ranges from 1.0 to 2.0 cm), square lift net (mesh size ~1.0 cm) and conical and box trap. The total length (TL) and body weight (BW) were measured for each individual. The allometric co-efficient b values ranged between 2.64 (B. lohachata) to 3.27 (N. nandus) and were highly significant, with p < .001 for all species. Additionally, for the first time, the study provides LWR information for B. dario, B. lohachata, E. danricus, O. pabda, T. lalius and P. phutunio, beneficial for fishery biologists and to update the online database (FishBase). The study also recorded a maximum length for P. phutunio. The present observations are significant for the sustainable management and conservation of these fishes in the Gajner beel floodplain, NW Bangladesh and the surrounding ecosystems.

Our study presents LWRs of 12 fish species from eight families in the Gajnerbeel, NW Bangladesh. In addition, for the first time, this study provides information on LWRs for B. dario, B. lohachata, E. danricus, O. pabda, P. phutunio and T. laliusfrom the Gajnerbeel floodplain that is not available in FishBase.

This study was conducted in the Gajner beel (Lat. 23°55′N; Long. 89°33′E), Pabna, northwestern (NW) Bangladesh. It is believed to be an important spawning and feeding grounds for many freshwater fish species in Bangladesh. Samples were collected occasionally from the fishermen's catches from November 2014 to October 2015. The fishes were caught using different types of traditional fishing gear, including gill net (mesh sizes 1.0–3.0 cm), cast net (mesh sizes 1.0–2.0 cm), square lift net (mesh size ~1.0 cm), and by various types of conical and box trap. For each individual, total length (TL) and total body weight (BW) were taken using digital slide calipers and an electronic balance with 0.1 cm and 0.1 g accuracy. The LWR was calculated using the equation: BW = a × TLb, where BW is the total body weight (g) and TL  total length (cm). Parameters a and b were estimated by linear regression analyses based on natural logarithms: ln (W) = ln (a) + bln (L). Additionally, 95% confidence intervals of a and band the co-efficient of determination (r2) were estimated. Extremes outliers were deleted from the regression analyses according to Froese (2006). Statistical analyses were performed using GraphPad Prism 6.5 software (GraphPad Software, Inc., San Diego, CA). A t-test was used to determine any significant difference from the isometric value (b =3) for LWRs. All statistical analyses were considered significant at a 5% (p < .05) level.

In our study, the size range of the species B. dario, B. lohachata, E. danricus, and H. fossilis covers less than 50% of the recorded TL maximum according to FishBase, which might be due to the selectivity of the fishing gear or that fishermen did not go where there are larger sizes, or that they did not grow to larger sizes in the beel ecosystem. Finally, this study provides valuable information on LWRs for 12 fish species from the Gajnerbeel, Pabna, NW Bangladesh, which can be used as a baseline for further study. The study can be very effective for use in the sustainable management and conservation of these species in the Gajnerbeel, NW Bangladesh and in the surrounding ecosystems.
