Performance of Different Organic Matter for Organic Potato Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

There were four different organic matter like Tobacco dust (Barley) waste @ 5.0 t ha^-1 (basal 3.0 t ha^-1 + side application 2.0 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP), Tobacco dust (Local) waste @ 5.0 t ha^-1 (basal 3.0 t ha^-1 + side application 2.0 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP), Vermi compost (Annapurna) @ 3.0 t ha^-1 (basal 2.0 t ha^-1 + side application 1.0 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP) and Mustard oil cake @ 1.50 t ha^-1 (basal 1.0 t ha^-1 + side application 0.50 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP) were used to produce organic potato where TCRC, BARI developed Recommended practice and control (no added organic matter) was also as treatment. Potato yield 24.11 t/ha was recorded in tobacco dust (Barley) waste @ 5.0 t ha^-1 (basal 3.0 t ha^-1 + side application 2.0 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP) used treatment and yield range of 04 different organic matter was 24.11 to 20.09 t/ha while 38.63 t/ha and 13.92 t/ha was in TCRC, BARI recommended fertilizer dose and control plot respectively

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacy of different organic matter for organic potato production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in RARS, BARI, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2019-20 cropping season and laid out following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 (three) replications or blocks having block to block distance 1.5 m. Unit plot size was 3 m x 3 m and 1.0 m was gap in-between two unit plot in each block. The treatments were T₁: Tobacco dust (Barley) waste @ 5.0 t ha^-1 (basal 3.0 t ha^-1 + side application 2.0 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP) , T₂: Tobacco dust (Local) waste @ 5.0 t ha^-11 (basal 3.0 t ha^-1 + side application 2.0 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP), T₃: Varmi compost (Annapurna) @ 3.0 t ha^-11 (basal 2.0 t ha^-1 + side application 1.0 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP), T₄: Mustard oil cake @ 1.50 t ha^-11 (basal 1.0 t ha^-1 + side application 0.50 t ha^-1 at 30 DAP), T₅: TCRC, BARI developed Recommended practice and T₆ : Control (No added organic and chemical fertilizer). Cow dung, tobacco dust (barley), tobacco dust (local), vermi compost and mustard oilcake were used 10 days before final land preparation following proper dose. Seeds of late blight resistant popular variety BARI Alu-90 (Alouette) were planted following spacing 60 cm x 25 cm i.e. 5 lines/plot and 12 hills/line on November 16, 2019. For T₅ treatment each plot received fertilizers like Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum, Magnesium Sulphate and Zinc Sulphate @ 320-200-250-120-100-10 kg ha^-1as recommended by Tuber Crops Research Center (TCRC), BARI. Agronomic practices and side application of different organic and chemical fertilizer as per treatment was ensured properly. Haulm pulling was done 90 days after planting and tubers were harvested 10 days after haulm pulling. Data on tuber yield like marketable tuber yield (weight and number) and total yield was recorded and were analyzed following statistically computer package MSTAT-C and means were compared using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

Organic fertilizer significantly influenced total tuber yield (t/ha) and marketable tuber yield (Weight and number basis) over control where no added chemical and organic fertilizer. The significantly highest yield (38.63 t/ha) was recorded from recommended practice (TCRC, BARI recommended dose) which was statistically different from all treatments. The lowest yield (12.21 t/ha) was harvested from control plot. Considerable marketable yield (Size > 28 mm), significantly highest marketable yield (37.02 t/ha) was observed in recommended practiced treatment and it was also statistically different from all. Significantly lowest yield (12.25 t/ha) was in control plot. The significantly highest percentage marketable yield was in (96.18%) was in tobacco dust (Barley) waste @ 5.0 t ha^-1 used plot and it was identical with all except control plot
