Development of Ac Powered Solar Pump for Surface Water Irrigation (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The solar pump is gaining popularity worldwide because the power is environment friendly and renewable in nature. A 750 W centrifugal type dc motor operated solar pump was fabricated at Farm Machinery & Postharvest Process Engineering Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 2016-17. The size of both the suction and delivery pipe was 51.0 mm. The pump was directly coupled with a 3-phase induction motor (dc). The input power was 1200 W_p/3000 VA (max) and the input voltage was 200 V_ac (line to line). The dc power was converted with a 1000 VA inverter. Average solar radiation, voltage and current were found 350 W/m² 188.87 V and 3.34 A, respectively during testing of the pump. The maximum discharge was found to be 266.22 l/min at the suction head of 1.30 m. A minimum discharge of 87.56 l/min was found at the suction head of 4.80 m. The average discharge was obtained 170.89 L/min. The DC motor operated solar pump may be used for surface water irrigation in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

a) Fabrication of ac motor powered solar pump with locally available materials b) Testing and performance evaluation of solar pump at different suction heads.

Methodology:

A 750W centrifugal type dc motor operated solar pump was fabricated at Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering (FMPE) Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during 2016-17. The size of both the suction and delivery pipe was 51.0 mm (2 inches). The pump was directly coupled with a 750 W, 3-phase induction motor (dc). The input power was 1200 W_p/3000 VA (max) and input voltage was 200 V_ac (line to line). The dc power was converted with a 1000 VA inverter (Supernova Engineering). The solar pump was tested in the pump testbed of FMPE Division, BARI, Gazipur in a partly sunny day of 14 April 2017. The pump was operated by a 1200 W_p solar panel. The solar panels were connected such a combination of series-parallel connections that the output voltage would be about 200 V_dc. A check valve was inserted in the suction pipe and immersed in water. The other end of the suction pipe was connected by clamp with the suction pipe of the pump. The solar panels were placed south facing with a 23.5° inclination. Before starting, the input and output voltages and current of the inverter were measured with ac/dc multimeter (Uni-T Product, UT-203, made in China). Then the pump was primed with water. The motor switch was made ON and water was discharged from the delivery pipe of the pump. The pump was tested at 1.3, 2.70, 3.84 and 4.80 m suction heads. The suction head 1.3 was maintained just by placing the pump on the dike of the pond. Another three heads were maintained raising the pump on the platform of the pump testbed. The discharge of the pump was measured at 15 minutes intervals using a water flow meter by fitting it with the delivery pipe of the pump. Solar radiation was measured at 15 minutes interval by a solar meter (model 5.0, Solartech Inc., USA). Pump speed was measured using a digital techometer.
