Survey on Diseases of Fruit Crops

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey on major diseases of major fruit crops was conducted at Tangail, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Gazipur and Khagrachori districts during 2019-2020 cropping season. From the survey it was found that gummosis disease of jackfruit and greening disease of citrus are predominant. The highest incidence of gummosis disease of jackfruit 74% and greening disease of citrus 66% were found in Khagrachori. Incidence of die back of guava was higher at Gazipur. Maximum incidence of panama and sigatoka of banana was recorded at Tangail. Incidence of other fruit diseases are low to medium at the irrespective of surveyed locations

Objectives:

The present study has been done to conduct a comprehensive survey on major diseases of different fruit crops of Bangladesh

Methodology:

Five districts namely Tangail, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Gazipur and Khagrachori were selected for conducting the survey on major diseases of different fruit crops. One upazilla from each district viz. Madhupur upazilla of Tangail, Sadar upazilla of Rangpur, Bhaluka upazilla of Mymensingh, Sadar upazilla of Gazipur and Sadar upazilla of Khagrachori district were surveyed. A total of 10 farmers' fields were surveyed in each upazilla. Data was recorded on the incidence of major diseases of fruit crops.

Survey on major diseases of fruit crops was done in five districts of the country. From the results of the survey it is indicated that the incidence of gummosis disease of jackfruit and greening disease of citrus were most predominant in all of the surveyed districts (Table 1). The highest incidence of gummosis disease of jackfruit 74% was observed in Khagrachori and the lowest 55% was observed in Mymensingh district. The maximum incidence of citrus greening 66% was found in Khagrachori district and minimum incidence of citrus greening 32% was found in Rangpur district. Incidence of panama and sigatoka diseases of banana was highest in Tangail(42%) but lowest 23% in Rangpur district. Incidence of dieback of guava was higher 44% in Gazipur and lower 22% in Khagrachori district. Jackfruit trees are dying drastically in Bangladesh due to the gummosis and canker diseases with the climate change (Rahman, et al. 2011). Major diseases of fruit crops are predominant in Bangladesh (Rahman, 2014). The present findings are in corroborate with the findings of Rahman et. al. 2011 and Rahman 2014. So, research should be needed to develop the sustainable management technology of different major diseases of fruit crops as early as possible to ensure food and nutritional security in the country.
