A field experiment on the requirement of zinc and boron in Potato-Maize-T. aman cropping pattern was carried out in Tista Meander Floodplain soil of  On-Farm Research Station, Bogra (AEZ 3) during 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-2016. The objectives were to estimate the requirement of zinc and boron on the yield of Potato-Maize-T.aman in the pattern and to find out the optimum dose of both the elements for yield maximization. Initially, four levels each of zinc (0, 2, 3 and 4 kg ha-1) and boron (0, 1, 1.5, and 2 kg ha-1) along with a blanket dose of N170P50K135S20Mg10 kg ha-1 & cow dung 5 t ha-1 arranging in a randomized complete block design were employed in this study. The treatments were modified in the second crop dividing each treatment into four. Yield and yield contributing characters were influenced for all the crops with some insignificance for some treatments. Application of zinc and boron in the successive crop was found prominent for yield increment in comparison to controls. Results showed that the combination of Zn3.0B1.5 kg ha-1 should be applied for the successive crops for maintaining yield in the study area.

The objectives were to estimate the requirement of zinc and boron on the yield of Potato-Maize-T.aman in the pattern and to find out the optimum dose of both the elements for yield maximization.

The experiment was initiated in the Tista Meander Floodplain soil of the on-farm research division (OFRD), Bogra (AEZ 3) during the rabi season of 2013-14. There were 4 treatment combinations (T1 = Zn0B0, T2 = Zn2B1, T3 = Zn3B1.5 and T4 = Zn4B2) for potato comprising 4 levels each of zinc (0, 2, 3 and 4 kg ha-1) and boron (0, 1, 1.5, 2.0, kg ha-1). The treatment combination was changed in the 2nd crop maize. Blanket doses of N170 P50 K135 S20 Mg10 kg ha-1 & cow dung 5 t ha-1 were used. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 8m x 6m. The tested variety for potatoes was cardinal. All fertilizers and cow dung were applied at the time of final land preparation. Zinc and boron were applied as zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. The seeds of the first crop in the pattern, potato were sown in lines maintaining a spacing of 60 cm x 25 cm and using a seed rate of 1500 kg ha-1 on 25 November 2013. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were done to keep the plant healthy. The potato was harvested on 26 February 2014 at its maturity. Plant height, foliage coverage (at 70 DAT), number of tubers per plant and yield was measured. Prior to experimentation collected a composite sample of the topsoil (0-15 cm depth) was analyzed in the laboratory of the Soil Science Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). After harvesting of potato, each of the experimental plots was divided into four plots to observe the residual effect of the initial treatments applied in the potato. As a result, there were 16 treatment combinations in each replication. Blanket doses of N170 P70 K65 S10 Mg10 kg ha-1 & cow dung 5 t ha-1 were used. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m. The tested variety for potatoes was BARI Hybrid Maize 5. All fertilizers and cow dung were applied at the time of final land preparation. Zinc and boron were applied as zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Seeds were sown in lines maintaining a spacing of 75 cm x 25 cm and using a seed rate of 30 kg ha-1 on 05 March 2014. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were done to keep the plant healthy. Maize was harvested on 24 June 2014 at its maturity. Plant height, cob breadth and length, seed cob-1 and yield were measured. After harvesting of maize experimental plots were prepared for T Aman rice. Twenty-five-day-old seedlings of T Aman were transplanted in each of the experimental plots. Blanket doses of N100 P25 K80 S15 Mg10 kg ha-1 & cow dung 5 t ha-1 were used. The plots were not disturbed for the crop. Only the soil was prepared for T.aman rice transplantation. The treatments were arranged in a RCBD with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m. The tested variety for T Aman was BRRI dhan 32. All fertilizers and cow dung were applied at the time of final land preparation. Zinc and boron were applied as zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Seedlings were sown in lines maintaining a spacing of 25 cm x 15 cm and using a seed rate of 10 kg ha-1 on 21 July 2014. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were done to keep the plant healthy. T Aman was harvested 15 November 2014 at its maturity. No. of effective tillers, no. of defective tillers, panicle length, grain panicle-1, grain and straw yield were measured.

Potato-Maize-T. aman cropping pattern was found responsive to zinc and boron application. Dropping of zinc and boron in cropping pattern was found unjustified for soil health conservation as it declined yield performance of crops to some extent. Zn3.0 with B1.5 kg ha-1 can be recommended for all the successive crops for maintaining the yield for Tista Meander Floodplain soils (AEZ 3).
