Ninety-two exotic germplasm of fababean were evaluated at pulse research sub-station, Gazipur during Rabi 2017-2018 for yield and yield contributing characters. Results showed that all the characters under study were significantly different among the genotypes. The result revealed that 11NF014b-16 genotype gave the highest yield followed by 11NF008b-15 and the lowest yield was obtained from genotype 11NFO11b-7.

The present experiment has been undertaken to find out the high yielding, disease-resistant and adaptable genotypes of fababean in the Bangladesh environment.

The experiment was conducted at PRSS, BARI, Gazipur during Rabi season, 2017-18 to find out the high yielding, disease-resistant and adaptable genotypes in the Bangladesh environment. 92 exotic germplasm collected from Australia were evaluated under this trial. This trial was sown on 26 November 2017 with a view for identifying high-yielding genotypes. The experiment was laid out in an alpha-lattice design. The unit plot size was 2 rows x 4m  long and spacing was 40 cm x 10 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and covered by soils. Recommended fertilizers were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The crop was harvested after maturity. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 5 randomly selected plants from each plot. Grain yield (kg ha-1) were recorded from the whole plot. Data were analyzed by using R- software program.

The variations among the genotypes of fababean lines were studied on a multivariate scale using Mahalanobis (1936) D2 statistics. It appears that there were significant variations among all the genotypes. The covariance matrix gave non hierarchical clustering among 92 fababean genotypes and grouped them into ten clusters (Table 6.1). Cluster IX and X contain the largest number (16) of genotypes followed by cluster IV (13). Cluster I and VIII each included four genotypes. The genotypes accumulated in the same cluster are not sharply diversified. Average intra and inter-cluster distances of ten clusters are presented in Table 6.2. It was observed that cluster VII had a high distance from the rest. It was suggested that the genotype in cluster VII was distinctly different from others. The highest distance was obtained between cluster III and IX (29.34) and it was followed by the distance between clusters III and X (26.84), III and IV  (23.86).  The higher inter-cluster values indicated that the genotypes belonging to each pair of clusters were far diverse, accordingly, the higher heterosis in progeny could be observed. The distances between the clusters V and VI, V and VII, IX and X, IV and VI had almost the same and minimum values. It was suggested that the genotypes belong to cluster VI would not result from significant variation when crosses were made between the genotypes of cluster IV and V, respectively. The distance between the cluster's minimum values suggested that, genotypes belonging to these clusters were less diverged. The genotypes within a cluster tend to diverse less from each other possibly due to similarity of parentage. The intra-cluster distance was the highest in cluster VII (0.90) followed by cluster V (0.84). The lowest intra- cluster distance was in cluster II (0.41) having eleven genotypes. Chowdhury et al. (2006) obtained larger inter-cluster distances than the intra-cluster distances in a multivariate analysis of wheat.  The intra-cluster distances were less than the inter-cluster distances, suggesting wider genetic diversity among the genotypes between the groups. Among the tested genotypes, 20 genotypes showed significant differences from one another in respect of yield and other yield contributing characters presented in Table 6.3. Days to the flower of fababean were varied from 37-73 days. The maximum days to flower 73 days were recorded in 11NF011b-7and the minimum 37 days in 11NF008b-14. The ranges of days to maturity were varied from (103-115) days. The maximum days to maturity 115 days was recorded in 11NF005e-6 and PBA WARDA and minimum 103 days in 11NF008b-9, 11NF008b-16, 11NF010a-2, 11NF013c-12 and 11NF020a-4. The maximum number of branches/plant (12.2) was recorded 11NF014a-12 and minimum (3.6) in 11NF008b-16. Plant height ranged from 77.2-79cm. The maximum plant height 79 cm was recorded in 11NF008b-15 and lowest (49cm) in 11NF014a-12.

The number of pods plant-1 varied from 60-12.4. The maximum number pods plant-1 (12.4) was obtained from 11NF0086-14, 11NF005e-6 followed by 11NF008b-15 and11NF014a-12 and the lowest (6.0) in 11NF014-16, 11NF020a-4. The number of seeds pod-1 varied from 1.8-3.4. The maximum number of seeds pod-1 (3.4) was recorded from 11NF020b-4 and the minimum (1.8) from 11NF0101-2. 100 seed wt. ranged from 49.3-32.7g and maximum 100 seed weight 49.3g obtained from 11NF008b-9 and minimum 32.7g in 11NF014b-16.  The yield of the tested genotypes varied from 300-518 kg/ha. The maximum yield 518 kg ha-1was harvested 11NF014b-16 followed by (508 kg ha-1) in 11NF008b-15 and the lowest (300 kg ha-1) in 11NF011b-7. All the genotypes under study provided considerable significant variations on agronomic characters and yield. But all genotypes perform lower yields at Gazipur location. So, the germplasm needed to be evaluated next season to explore the potentiality in the multi-location.
