The addition of organic matter in conjunction with gypsum has been successful in reducing adverse soil properties associated with sodic soils. A field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-2018 to observe the effects of gypsum and Farm Yard Manure (FYM) on soil salinity and yield of mustard. It was laid out in RCB design with three replications including six treatments where T1 is assigned for farmers' practice, T2  is for FYM of 5 t ha-1 and Gypsum 200 kg ha-1, T3  is for FYM 5 t ha-1 and Gypsum 400 kg ha-1, T4 is for  FYM 10 t ha-1 and Gypsum 200 kg ha-1, T5 is for FYM 10 t ha-1 and Gypsum 400 kg ha-1, T6  is for (Soil Test Based) STB recommended dose of Fertilizer. From the result it is evident  that among different treatments T5 (FYM 10 t ha-1 and Gypsum 400 kg ha-1) produced the highest seed yield (1.43 t ha-1). STB recommended dose of Fertilizer (T6) gave the statistically similar yield with T5 treatment. Farmers' practice produced the lowest seed yield (0.92 t ha-1). From the economic analysis it was found that the highest BCR (2.12) was recorded in application of FYM 10 t ha-1 and Gypsum 200 kg ha-1 followed by STB recommended dose of fertilizer application (2.04). The use of FYM not only gives higher yield but also improves the soil organic matter, maintains soil health and keeps the soil and environment free from pollution.

To compare the effects of variable gypsum rate and farm yard manure on mitigation of soil salinity and yield of mustard

Experimental site and design: The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi (winter) season of 2017-2018 to observe the effect of gypsum and FYM on soil salinity and yield of mustard. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ-13. The land topography was medium low. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture with pH 7.2. There were six treatments viz. T1 assigned for farmers' practice, T2 assigned for FYM 5 t ha-1 and Gypsum 200 kg ha-1, T3 assigned for FYM 5 t ha-1 and Gypsum 400 kg ha-1, T4 assigned for FYM 10 t ha-1 and Gypsum 200 kg ha-1, T5 assigned for FYM 10 t ha-1 and Gypsum 400 kg ha-1, T6 assigned for STB recommended dose of Fertilizer. The crop variety was BARI Mustard-14. The experiment was laid in RCB design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4.0 m × 2.1 m. Data on yield and yield components were recorded and analysed statistically using MSTAT-C program. Field measurement of soil salinity: Soil salinity at different dates was recorded at 09:00-10:30 a.m. every 15 days interval, starting from sowing until harvest. The salinity was measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data were taken at the middle of the plot. Collected data were analysed using ANOVA procedure. Once a week, a calibration for the meter was made by comparing with laboratory data. Seed sowing and crop management: Seeds were sown on 07 December, 2017 with row to row distance of 30 cm. The experimental plots of all treatments except T1 and T6 were fertilized with 250-170-85-5-10 kg ha-1 Urea, TSP, MoP, Zinc Sulphate and Boric Acid respectively. Half of Urea and all other fertilizers were applied as basal dose and remaining Urea was top dressed at pre- flowering stage (20-22 DAE). In case of farmers' practice, Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum were applied @ 280, 90, 50 and 80 kg ha-1, respectively as basal dose during the final land preparation. Treated plots were fertilized by following FRG, 2012 guide. Three irrigations were applied during the growing period. Weeding was done at 14 days after sowing followed by thinning to keep plant to plant distance of 10 cm. Disease and insect pests were always well controlled using suggested applies (BARI, 2014). The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

From the above findings, it may be concluded that application of gypsum in combination of FYM had better performance on growth and yield attributes of mustard (cv. BARI Mustard-14). The use of FYM not only gives higher yield but also improves the soil organic matter, maintains soil health and keeps the soil and environment free from pollution.
