A field experiment was carried out to study the effect of boron on a flower, fruit set and yield of Bt Begun-2 at Soil Science Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The design of the experiment was RCB with 3 (three) replications. The treatment combinations of foliar spray of boron were T1: 50 ppm B, T2:100 ppm B, T3: 150 ppm B and T4: control. The micronutrient boron (B) in the form of boric acid (H3BO3) having 18% boron were applied at full bloom and the other two were given at an interval of 10 days. The tested variety was BARI Bt Begun-2. The yield and yield contributing character of Bt Begun-2 were significantly affected by foliar application of boron. All parameters showed a higher tendency in T2 treatment. The highest yield (33.1 t ha-1) was observed in 100ppm foliar application of boron and it was significantly higher with untreated plants. Foliar application of boron is effective on a flower, fruit set and yield of Bt Begun-2.

 i) To study the effect of boron on flowering, fruit setting and yield of Bt Begun-2 and ii) to find out the optimum dose of boron for maximizing the yield of  Bt Begun-2.

 

A field experiment was carried out in the Soil Science Division of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur on 15 December 2017 with a view of study the effect of boron on flowers, fruit set and yield of Bt begun-2. The design of the experiment was RCB with 3 (three) replications having a unit plot of 3m × 3m. BARI Bt begun-2 variety was used in the experiment. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 116-32-70-13-2 kg ha-1 of N-P-K-S-Zn in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate respectively. Equal size healthy thirty-five days old seedlings of brinjal were transplanted on 15th December 2017 with a spacing of 100 cm from row to row and 75 cm from plant to plant. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Initial soil samples collected from 0-15 cm depth prior to fertilizer application, were analyzed for all-important soil parameters using standard procedures. Standard methods were used in these determinations. Soil pH was measured by a combined glass calomel electrode (Jackson, 1958). Organic carbon was determined by the wet oxidation method (Walkley and Black). Total N was determined by a modified Kjeldahl method. Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and K were determined by NH4OAc extractable method, copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) were determined by DTPA extraction followed by AAS reading. Boron (B) was determined by CaCl2 extraction method. Available P was determined by the Bray and Kurtz method while S was determined using the turbidimetric method with BaCl2. To study the effect of boron as a foliar spray on the yield of Bt Begun-2, boric acid (H3BO3) having 18% boron were applied at full bloom and the other two were given at an interval of 10 days. The treatment combinations of foliar spray of boron were T1:50 ppm B, T2: 100ppm B, T3: 150 ppm B and T4:control. Foliar sprays were applied using a hand sprayer. All treatments were applied as a foliar spray on plants using a hand-operated compressed air sprayer at the rate of 10 liters/plot. The time of foliar spray was 8:00 A.M. Young fruits were harvested from time to time at the edible stage. Five plants were randomly selected from each and every treatment for recording necessary yield data such as plant height (cm), fruit length (cm), number of fruits per plant, fruit weight (g) and yield (t ha-1). Fruit quality was total soluble solid (TSS) and vitamin C. Data were analyzed statistically and means were compared by Tukey’s multiple comparison test using Excel version 4.0 (Esumi Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). Brinjal fruit from each treatment was cut into small slices and pooled. Samples were homogenized in a blender and a portion of the homogenate was taken to determine the fruit quality. Total soluble solids content (TSS) was determined at 20°C with a refractometer and reported as Brix. Ascorbic acid contents (vitamin C) were measured by the classical titration method using 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenols solution and expressed as mg 100 g-1 of fresh weight (Miller, 1998).

Foliar fertilizer sprays have proved to be a sustainable, effective, and low-cost strategy to improve the yield and quality of crops. Foliar application of boron enhanced the number of fruit, fruit weight and yield of the fruit of Bt Begun-2. It was, therefore, concluded that 100 ppm of boron as a foliar application could be used to increase fruit yield and quality of brinjal. The experiment needs to be continued for next year for confirmation of the result.
