The present article mainly focuses plant species used in beauty care and cosmetics. The ethno botanical study has been resulted in recording of total 43 plants under 32 families under 40 genera that were reported by interviewing 27 key informants. According to the habit diversity of recorded plant, 52% were herb, 38% were tree, and 10% were shrub. Leaves (28%), fruits (28%), Seed (25%) were the most commonly used part for plants or for the preparation of the mixture which is used in the beauty care and herbal cosmetics. The most frequently used plants for beauty care were Aloe vera, Azadirachta indica, Cucumis sativus, Curcuma longa, Lawsonia inermis, Mentha arvensis, Citrus limon, Santalum album, Phyllanthus emblica, Rosa damascena, Trigonella foenum-graecum. Active ingredients may found from these plants which could be the good source of plant based cosmetics for beauty care.

This study was design to make an inventory of important plants which have been used in beauty parlor and cosmetics by ethnobotanical survey that can be further investigated for find out active bioactive compounds.

Ethnobotanical study carried out in 2016 following the standard guidelines for ethnobotanical survey (Martin, 2004; Alexiades, 1996; Chambers, 1994). To get the information about the plants used in the beauty parlor and cosmetic, key informant's interviews (Martin, 2004; Tremblay, 1957) were implemented. The data have been recorded through semistructured interviews, focus group discussion and Market survey (Alexiades, 1996; Chambers, 1994; Martin 1995). Twenty seven interviews were taken from fifteen beauty parlor which were situated at Khilgaon, Kakrail, Bailyroad, and Dhaka University campus, Banani, Dhanmondi and Gulshan in Dhaka city. Market surveys were taken from New market area. During data collection name of the informants, age, location and experience was recorded. All informants were female and professionally they were beauty parlor worker or beautician. Voucher specimens for each medicinal plant have been collected and processed using standard herbarium techniques (Hyland, 1972; Alexiades, 1996).The specimens were identified consulting different Floras viz., Hooker, 1872-1897; Prain, 1903; Uddin and Hassan ,2004; Siddiqui et al., 2007c and Ahmed et al., 2008a, 2008b, 2009b, 2009c, 2009d, 2009e. Specimens available at Dhaka University Salar Khan Herbarium (DUSH) were consulted in identifying the collected plant specimens. Voucher specimens have been deposited at Salar Khan Herbarium, Department of Botany, University of Dhaka. To find out the most cited plant, the frequency of citation (CF %) for a plant was calculated as follows: Frequency of citation for a particular species= (Number of citations for that particular species/ Number of all citations for all species)*100 (Bahmani et al., 2014; Uddin et al., 2014, Uddin et al., 2015).

During survey all informants were not willingly share their knowledge. They want to keep secret of the plant or plant based product they have been used. But they (key informants) were all agreed that maximum client want to get the herb based product for their skin or hair and others applications. Plants used in the beauty parlor were collected from local market as powder form or mixture form which is sold by different herbal based cosmetic company. These herbs are currently used in their crude form, either dried into powders or pulverized with pestle and mortar. The end product contains a large amount of inactive unnecessary compounds (Anil, 2012). The products are often biologically ineffective because there aren?t enough active components in the formulae. The concentration and action of bioactive compounds extracted from herbs have to be increased (Hazra and Panda, 2013). These formulae have to be tested in scientific trials with an evidence based approach. Plants based cosmetics have growing demand in the world market and is an invaluable gift of nature. Herbal formulations always have attracted considerable attention because of their good activity and comparatively lesser or nil side effects with synthetic drugs (Akash et al. 2014). Bioactive compounds may be found from the most cited species from present study which could be the good source for formulation of herbal cosmetics in future. Further ethanobotanical and ethanopharmacological study may lead to the discovery of plants and compounds for beauty care and cure.
