An investigation was carried out on the number of scion production in mango by clonal hedgerows to meet up the demand for quality scions during the peak period of mango grafting for the nursery owners in Bangladesh. Mango clones (grafts) were planted at different densities in clonal hedgerow beds. Pruning was done at different times to enhance more branching i.e., more scion production. Scions were harvested in different times according to maturity. The result revealed that 0.75 m and 1.00 m planting distances of the clone (grafts) in the hedgerow bed and pruning/pinching during February produced the best and abundant quality of scion for grafting in mango.

An investigation was undertaken to optimize planting distance to select the most favored pruning time for a huge number of quality scion production of mango from clonal hedgerows under Bangladesh conditions.

The investigation was conducted from 1999 to 2002 at the germplasm (GP) center of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The two-factor experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 times of pruning (20 January, 20 February and 20 March) and 5 planting distances (0.50 m, 0.75 m, 1.00 m, 1.25 m and 1.50 m.) in 3 replications having 10 clones (grafts) of mango cv. Amrapali per replication. Thus, a total of 450 clones (grafts) were planted during October 1999. Disease and insect free clones (grafts) having 1.0 -1.15 m height were selected for the experiment. The selected land in the GP center was well pulverized with a power tiller. Then the land was left to open sunlight. The pits of 60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm were made with a spade. After 15 days of digging, the pits were filled up with soil mixed with 15 kg of well-rotted cow dung, 100 g of TSP, 100 g Gypsum and 10 g Zinc sulphate. After fertilizing, the pits were again left for 20 days to decompose the manure and fertilizer. Urea and MP @ 400 g and 50 g respectively were top-dressed two times (February and September) in a year. The urea was applied more than recommended for fruit trees to enhance the vegetative growth. The selected clones were planted in the hexagonal planting system at different distances described in the treatment. The planting was done in the afternoon and followed by a light irrigation. Pruning of the clones (grafts) was done as per assigned treatment. Mostly pinching was done just after new flashes to develop more new shoots through breaking apical dominance. The scions have collected as and when they were mature by cutting with a sharp sterilized secateurs. The best (the quality measure was done in respect to length, girth, fresh weight, oven-dry weight, % dry matter and C:N ratio before using scion in grafting) scions were separated and considered as scions in this research. Data on the number of scions per unit area and per plant were recorded. The number of the scion/unit area (sq. m) was calculated by the formula,

Number of scion per sq. m =Number of total scion harvested/Totalareaof clonal hedgerow - and was expressed as a number.

Statistical Analysis Statistical analysis was performed to determine the main effects of pruning time and planting distance on the production of scion, where direct comparison of the performance of the treatments was made. The data collected were examined, tabulated and analyzed by a statistical programme MSTAT-C following the appropriate design of the experiment (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). The means for all the treatments were calculated and the analyses of variance (ANOVA) for most of the characters under consideration were performed by the ‘F’ variance test. The significance of the difference between pair of means was performed by the Least Significance Difference (LSD) test taking the probability level 1% as the maximum unit of significance.

The result was in partial agreement with the findings of BenYa’acov (1988), who found that trees on rootstock produced by clonal propagation usually bear fruits early, they are true-to-type and more uniform than trees grafted on seedling rootstocks. The February pruning also produced a lot of mature scion as it got more than 1.5 months of maturity of scion. Under this investigation, 0.75 m and 1.00 m planting distances of the clone (grafts) in the hedgerow bed and pruning/pinching during February produced the best and abundant quality scion for grafting in mango. The results revealed that intra and inter-competition among the plants, the breaking of apical dominance through pinching and pruning, use of nitrogenous fertilizers during vigorous growth stage of mango plants produced huge number of quality scions due to the change of reproductive phase of the plants into the vegetative phase. The result is in agreement with the result of many researchers in different times in different countries. Phase change has been recognized by botanists, foresters, and horticulturists (Gioia, 1992) for many years and labeled with such terms as juvenility (Doorenbos,1965; Frost 1938; Hackett, 1985; Schaffelitzky de Muckadell, 1959; Stoutmyer, 1937; Wareing and Frydman, 1976; Zimmerman, 1972). They found that the vegetative phase of a plant might be continued through the life cycle of the plants through pruning, application of nitrogenous fertilizers and stoppage the production of florizen.
