On-farm Adaptive Trial with BARI Bt Brinjal Variety

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The trials were conducted at 04 farmers’ field of Dumki & Kuakata of Patuakhali district and Amtali Upazilla of Borguna district during 2019-20 to evaluate the performance of the BARI Bt Bagun-2 variety under farmers’ field condition and to popularize the variety among the farmers in the southern region of Bangladesh. Bt Brinjal variety viz. BARI Bt Begun-2 with one row of BARI Begun-4 as non-Bt Brinjal counterpart variety was used as boarder crops in the trials. No Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) infestation were observed in Bt variety. The highest Fruit yield of BARI Bt Begun-2 was found at 23.42 t ha^-1 whereas the counterpart produced 14.53 t ha^-1.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at 04 farmers’ fields of Dumki & Kuakata of Patuakhali district and Amtali Upazilla of Borguna district during 2019-20. Only BARI Bt Begun-2 with one row of BARI Begun-4 as non-Bt brinjal counterpart variety was used as boarder crops in the trials. Unit plot area was 15 decimal with the maintaining spacing of 100 cm x 80 cm. Stable bleaching powder was applied 15 days before transplanting @ 21 kg ha^-1 for preventive measures against bacterial wilt. The crop was sowing on 8-22 December 2019 and its harvested date was 6 February-9 June 2020. The fertilizers were used @ 300-250-200-100-10-10 kg ha^-1 Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate, Boric acid, respectively along with cowdung 10.0 t ha^-1 (BARI, 2011). One-third MoP and the rest of fertilizers except Urea were applied during final land preparation. The remaining two-third MoP was divided into three splits and applied at 20 DAP, at the flowering and fruiting stage. Urea was applied in four equal installments at 20 DAP, at flowering and two times at the fruiting stage. Plant protection measures for other pests were taken. Impel was sprayed @ 0.5 ml L^-1 alternately at the seedling stage to control whitefly in some heavily infested plot. Similarly, Bavistin @ 2 ml L^-1 was sprayed in 2-3 times to control fusarium wilt infested plots. Other intercultural operations like irrigation and weeding were done as and when necessary. 10 plants selected randomly from each plot to record plant height, individual fruit weight, number of fruits plant^-1, length and breadth of fruit, number of marketable fruit & BSFB infested fruit plant^-1. Yield data was calculated based on total plots. The gross economic return was calculated on the basis of the prevailing market price of the commodities.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance of BARI Bt Bagun-2 variety was better over the BARI Begun-4, the non Bt counterpart variety regarding Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) infestation in southern areas. This technology is highly effective against the target insect pest BSFB. But some diseases like Fusarium wilt were observed in some fields. Farmers are very much interested to cultivate Bt Bagun variety in a large areas in the next year.
