A field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2017-18 to find out the efficacy of herbicide on weed control and crop response in lentil. Eight treatments viz. T1= Whip super 9EC (Fenoxiprop-p-Ethyl, 750ml ha-1), T2= Panida 33 EC (Pendimethalin, 2.5 L ha-1), T3=Granite 240 SC (Penoxulam, 93.70 ml ha-1), T4=Weednil 5 EC (Quizalofop-p-Ethyle, 650 ml ha-1), T5= Sunrice 150 WG (Ethoxysulfuran, 200 g ha-1), T6= Activar 25 EC (Oxadiazon, 1L ha-1), T7= Control (No weeding) and T8= Hand weeding were included in this experiment. Herbicides were applied at the moist condition of soil after irrigation for proper seed germination that means the pre-emergence condition and six herbicides were applied in post-emergence at 20 Days after emergence. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Among the herbicides, Whip super was effective to control narrow leaf weeds for achieving higher yield in the pre-emergence application of herbicides and application of whip super in post-emergence was profitable for lentil cultivation on the basic economics.

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2017-18 under AEZ-11. Eight treatments viz. T1= Whip super 9EC (Fenoxiprop-p-Ethyl, 750 ml ha-1), T2= Panida 33 EC (Pendimethalin, 2.5 L ha-1), T3=Granite 240 SC (Penoxulam, 93.70 ml ha-1), T4=Weednil 5 EC (Quizalofop-p-Ethyle, 650 mL ha-1), T5= Sunrice 150 WG (Ethoxysulfuran, 200 g ha-1), T6= Activar 25 EC (Oxadiazon, 1L ha-1), T7= Control (No weeding) and T8= Hand weeding were included this experiment. Herbicides were applied at the moist condition of soil after irrigation after seed sowing for proper seed germination that means the pre-emergence condition and six herbicides were applied in post-emergence at 20 Days after emergence. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The plot size was 4 m x 2.5 m. The sowing date was on 27 November 2017 and harvested on 12 March 2018. Seeds of BARI Masur-8 were used @ 35 kg ha-1. In the experimental plots fertilizers, @18-24-30-18-2.0-1 kg ha-1 N-P-K-S-Zn and B were applied during final land preparation (FRG-2012). Weed samples were collected from 1 m2 area of each plot at 25 DAS and weed dry matter was taken after oven dry. Plant population m-2 at harvest and yield contributing characters were recorded from 5 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield was calculated as kg ha-1. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and the mean values were adjusted by LSD at 0.05 levels of probability.

Cyperusrotundus (Mutha), Digitarias anguinalis (Anguli Grass), Echinochloa colonum (Khudashama) Chenopodium album (Bathua), Cynodon dactylon (Durba), Eclipta alba (Kesoti), Euphorbia hirta (Dudia), Mikaniasc andens (Mikania), Physalis minima (Fosks begun) and vicia sativa (Bonmasur) were found in lentil field. The dry weight of weeds m-2 varied at different treatments. The highest dry weight was recorded from Control (23.50g) and the lowest dry weight was calculated in Whip super (5.18 g) which was followed by Granite (6.25 g) at pre-emergence. Similarly, among the herbicides the highest efficiency of weed control was found in Whip super (75%) followed by Granite (73%) and the lowest weed control efficiency was recorded in Panida (23 %) at pre-emergence. In the case of post-emergence herbicides, Whip super killed the highest number of weeds which contained the lowest dry matter (3.92 g m-2) and the highest WCE (83%). Whip super, Panida and Weednil controlled the narrow leaf weed and Sunrise controlled sedge weed. In the case of pre-emergence herbicides, the lowest plant population m-2 was observed in Granite (49) which may be the residual effect of herbicides. The highest plant height was measured from control (42 cm) and the lowest plant height was obtained from Granite (36 cm). The maximum number of pods plant-1 was counted in hand weeding (91) and the minimum number of pods plant-1 in Sunrice (59). The seeds pod-1 was no significant effect. Hand weeding (2230 kg ha-1) produced the highest grain yield and the lowest grain yield was obtained from control (1270 kg ha-1). Among the herbicides, the highest grain yield was found in hand weeding (2473 kg ha-1) followed by Whip super (2273 kg ha-1) and the lowest grain yield was recorded in Granite (1017 kg ha-1). On the other hand, the application of post-emergence of herbicide caused no significant difference in the plant population. Herbicides also influenced the plant height, pods plant-1, which eventually impacted the seed yield. The tallest plant height was observed from Hand weeding (45 cm) and the shortest plant height was found from Sunrice (34 cm). The maximum number of pods plant-1 was counted in hand weeding (85) and the minimum number of pods plant-1 in Sunrice (45). Seeds pod-1 (no.) was not significantly different due to the application of herbicides. The highest seed yield was recorded from hand weeding (2400 kg ha-1) followed by Whip super (2077 kg ha-1) and the lowest seed yield in Sunrice (767 kg ha-1).

Economics

From the economic analysis, it was found that the highest gross return was obtained from hand weeding of both pre-emergence (Tk. 148399 ha-1) and postemergence herbicides (Tk. 144000 ha-1). But the highest gross margin (Tk. 104180 ha-1 and Tk. 92420 ha-1) and BCR (4.24 and 3.87) were obtained from Whip super (pre-emergence and post-emergence, respectively). It may be concluded that Whip super was an effective herbicide to control narrow leaf weed for achieving higher yield and economically profitable in pre-emergence and post-emergence conditions.
