A field experiment was conducted at Regional Pulses Research Station (RPRS), Madaripur during the Kharif-II season of 2017 to evaluate the exotic and local germplasm of blackgram to identify the yellow mosaic virus, powdery mildew resistant and high yielding genotypes. A significant difference was observed in YMV severity, no of pods/plant, 100 seed weight, and seed yield (kg/ha) etc. Among tested entries, several lines performed resistance to YMV and PM. YMV disease severity was lowest (1.33) in BBLXK-204002-19, BBLXK-2092005-2, BBLXK-2086136 and BD-6841. The severity of powdery mildew was minimum (1.00) in BBLXK-2004003-2 and BBLXK-2004003-6, VC-6379-23 whereas BD-6855, BD-6859, BD-6860, BD-6863, BD-6865 and BD-686610045 performed the highly resistant reaction. The local line BD-6840 conferred the highest seed yield (1437 kg/ha).

The present study was undertaken to select some YMV and powdery mildew resistant/tolerant lines of blackgram with an aim to develop new variety

The experiment consisted of 19 entries of exotic and 26 entries of local germplasm along with BARI Mash-1 as the check was conducted at RPRS, Madaripur during Kharif-II, 2017.  The local germplasm which are collected from the PGRC center BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. This local germplasm is too old that the place of the collection could not found. The experiment was laid out in two replications in a lattice design. Each entry was sown in a unit plot of 12m x 5m long with a spacing of 40 cm between rows. Spacing between two plots was 1m. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully at 3 cm depth then covered with soil on 17th October 2017. Weeding performed twice at 25 days and 45 days after sowing. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with check. Volium Flexi 300SC were sprayed 2 times for the control of flea beetle, aphid and pod borer. The crop was harvested within January 21-23, 2018. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Yellow mosaic virus (YMV) severity was rated on a 0-8 scale as described by Malik (1992). Powdery mildew of blackgram was also recorded on a 0-5 scoring scale (Gawande and Patil, 2003). The scale described below:

The tested blackgram entries differ significantly from one to another in respect of YMV under field conditions. YMV disease severity of the entries varied from 1.33-6.33. The minimum severity (1.33) of YMV found in BBLXK-204002-19, BBLXK-2092005-2 and BBLXK-2086136 whereas a maximum (6.33) observed in BBLXK-204003-1. Among the exotic 19 lines, three achieved immune reaction bearing score 1.33, five were graded as highly resistant which bear the score 2.33-2.67, four lines fall into resistant group bearing score 3.33, four were graded as moderately resistant bearing score 4.00-4.67, three lines graded as tolerant bearing score 5.33-5.67 and one line graded as moderately tolerant bearing score 6.33. YMV disease reaction of the local entries varied from 1.33-7.00. The minimum disease severity (1.33) was observed in BD-6841 whereas the maximum score (7.00) of YMV found in the line BD-6859.  Among 24 local lines, one achieved an immune reaction bearing score of 1.33, eleven were graded as highly resistant which bear the score 2.00-2.67, three lines fall into resistant group bearing score 3.00-3.67, four were graded as moderately resistant bearing score 4.33-4.67, four lines graded as moderately tolerant bearing score 6.00-6.67 and one-lines having score 7.00 occupy susceptible group. The check variety BARI Mash-1 had a score of 4.00 achieved moderately resistant reaction. Another disease powdery mildew showed variation in respect of disease reaction under field conditions. Powdery mildew disease reaction of the entries varied from 1.00-5.00. The disease severity was minimum (1.00) in BBLXK-204003-2 and BBLXK-204003-6 whereas a maximum (5.00) found in the line BBLXK-204001-15, BBLXK-204001-14 and BBLXK-204002-15. Among the exotic 19 lines, four achieved resistant reaction bearing score 1.00-1.67, one was graded as moderately resistant which bear the score of 2.33, twelve lines fall into susceptible group bearing score 3.00-4.33 and three were graded as highly susceptible bearing score 5.00. Powdery mildew disease reaction of the local entries varied from 1.00-5.00. The maximum score (5.00) observed in the line BD-6840, BD-6841, BD-6869, BD-10038, BD-10046 and BARI Mash-1.  Among the 24local lines, eight achieved highly resistant reaction bearing score 0.00, three was graded as resistant which bear the score 1.33, two lines fall into moderately susceptible group bearing score 2.33-2.67 and five were graded as susceptible bearing score 4.33-4.67 and six fall into the highly susceptible group. The check variety BARI Mash-1 had a score of 4.00 achieved susceptible reaction. In exotic lines days to flowering ranged 34-35 days. The ranges in days to maturity were 93-95. No. of branches/plant ranged from 1.33-2.33. Plant height (cm) was ranged from 20.67-26.00. The highest (26.00cm) plant height was found in BBLXK-200400-3 and the lowest (20.67cm) in BBLXK-204001-15.
