Forty-seven (47) accessions of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) were characterized at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), RARS, Jamalpur. Variation was presented in all characters except stem colour, leaf type, and flower colour. Plant growth rate stage-I showed medium-17 and high-30, prostrate-04, spreading-16, semi-erect-26 and Erect-1 accession. For leaflet shape linear-34, lanceolate-9 and ovate-lanceolate-4; green-25 and dark green-22 for leaf colour,  globular-35 and intermediated-12 for flower bud shape, small-6 and medium-41 for flowers size were observed. The pod shape such as oblong-elliptical-5, medium oblong-elliptical-32, breaded-7 and broad linear-3 other character pod curvature straight-40, slightly carved-5 and carved-2. On average, the plant height was 55.15 cm, the number of pods per plant was 28.76, pod length 2.67 cm, pod width 1.76 cm and the number of seeds per pod was 3.80. The range was obtained for a number of primary branches 5 to18, length of primary branch 21.5 to 74.5 cm, days to first flowering 57 to 75 days, the number of pods per plant 14 to 55 and  100-seed weight 3.1to 11.1g, respectively. The maximum CV found for the number of primary branches was 29.44% followed by 100-seed weight 25.08% and length of primary branch 23.57%.

  Grasspea

In Bangladesh, the first systematic collections of grass pea were made in 1979 in collaboration with ICRISAT. To promote their effective use for plant breeding programs, genetic resources need to be characterized for different qualitative and quantitative characters.

The experiment was carried out with 47 accessions of grass-pea at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), RARS, Jamalpur during 2015-2016. The seeds were directly sowing in prepared land sown on 2 December 2015. The distance between row to row was 40 cm and block to block 1m, respectively in a non replicated design. Measurement was performed on five individual plants of each accession. Optimum cultural practices were followed for grass pea characterization. Data was recorded in qualitative and quantitative characters as per pulse descriptor on International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR).

Qualitative characters in 47 ascensions were recorded. In plant growth rate stage-I, medium-17 and high-30. Prostrate-04, spreading-16, semi-erect-26 and Erect-1 were found.  On the other hand, three types of parameters were showed of stem wing widths such as narrow-7, medium-31 and wide-9 followed by leaf size for small-13, medium-30 and large-4, leaf tendrils for short-12, medium-25 and long-10. For leaflet shape linear-34, lanceolate-9 and ovate-lanceolate-4; green-25 and dark green-22 for leaf colour,  globular-35 and intermediated-12 for flower bud shape, small-6 and medium-41 for flowers size were observed. All accessions were shown the same parameter in stem colour, leaf type and flower colour such as green-47, bipinnate-47 and Blue-47. Stem waxy coating showed no coating-37, narrow-08, and medium-2. The pod shape such as oblong-elliptical-5, medium oblong-elliptical-32, breaded-7 and broad linear-3 other character pod curvature straight-40, slightly carved-5 and carved-2.The leaf senescence was showed no visual senescence-26, slight visual senescence-11, moderate senescence-8 and conspicuous concurrent senescence-2.  Pod beak shape pointed-43 and blunt-4 were observed. Range, mean, standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV %) were shown in Table 2. On average, the plant height was 55.15 cm, the number of pods per plant was 28.76, pod length 2.67 cm, pod width 1.76 cm and the number of seeds per pod was 3.80. The range was obtained for a number of primary branches 5 to18, length of primary branch 21.5 to 74.5 cm, days to first flowering 57 to 75 days, the number of pods per plant 14 to 55 and  100-seed weight 3.1to 11.1g. The maximum CV was found for the number of primary branches 29.44% followed by 100-seed weight 25.08% and length of primary branch 23.57%. The highest plant height showed in accession BD-5096 (88.5 cm) and the lowest BD-4851 (31.5 cm). The character number of primary branch, the highest showed in accession BD-4750 (18) and the lowest in BD-4844 (5). The maximum length of the primary branch was observed in accession BD-5096 (74.5cm) and the minimum BD-5192 (21.5cm). Early flowering was observed in the case of accession BD-3372 and BD-4750 (57 days) and late flowering in BD-5133 (75 days). Early maturity was observed in BD-3372 and BD-3367 (both 95 days). The highest number of pods per plant was observed in BD-5128 (55) and the lowest in BD-5099 (14). The pod length, highest was in BD-3372 (3 cm) and the lowest in BD-4945 (2 cm). In the case of pod width, the highest in accession BD-4829 (2.5 cm) and the lowest BD-4945 (1.3 cm) was observed. The accession BD-5125 (11.1 g) showed the maximum 100-seed weight and the minimum in BD-5100 (3.1 g). The mean value of characterized grass pea accessions was recorded.
