Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur

The experiment was conducted with 73 chickpea accessions (Cicer arietinum L.) for the assessment of genetic variability.  The genetic variability of 73 accessions of chickpea was estimated on the basis of qualitative and quantitative traits. None of the entries showed plant anthocyanin. In respect of growth habit, 49 accessions (67%) were spreading and 24 accessions (33%) were prostrate type. Leaf type, leaflet size, and pod length had no variation. For flower colour, dark pink 35 accessions (48%), light pink 37 accessions (51%), and white were 1 accession (1%). Seed colour had the maximum (7) variation among 73 chickpea germplasm. It was brown for 23 (32%), light brown for 17 (23%), dark brown for 19 (26%), reddish-brown for 5 (7%), grayish brown for 7 (10%), salmon brown for 1 (1%) and yellow-brown for 1 (1%) accession. The accession BD 6138 showed the highest number of basal primary branches (5.00), BD 6306 had the highest number of seeds per pod, BD 6406 had the highest number of pods per plant (247.6), BD 6300 had the highest seed weight per plant (65.89 g) and BD 6389 had the highest 100-seed weight (19.10 g). Days to 50% flowering were the lowest (67 days) in a total of 13 accessions and a total of 6 accessions matured in a minimum of 115 days. Seed weight per plant had the highest CV (37.42%) whereas days to maturity had the lowest (0.69%).

The experiment was undertaken to characterize the germplasm of chickpea for morphological variation.

Seventy-three germplasm of chickpea were grown for characterization during the rabi season of 2016-2017 at PGRC, RARS, BARI, Jessore. The seeds were sown in the experimental field on 5 December 2016. The seed of each accession was sown in a 3 × 1.6 m plot. Spacing 40cm X 20cm was maintained. Recommended doses of fertilizers such as urea 60, TSP 90, MP 40 and boric acid 1 kg ha-1 were applied in the experimental field.  Recommended cultural practices were followed. Data on nine qualitative and seven quantitative traits were logged as per IBPGR descriptors.

Qualitative variations of different traits in chickpea were observed. None of the entries showed plant anthocyanin. In respect of growth habit, spreading 49 accessions (67%) and prostrate 24 accessions (33%) were observed. Leaf type, leaflet size and pod length showed no variation. Three types of flowers were found in respect of flower colour. Dark pink 35 accessions (48%), Light pink 37 accessions (51%) and white 1 accession (1%) were observed. Seed colour showed maximum (7) variation among 73 chickpea accessions. Seed colour was found brown for 23 (32%), light brown for 17 (23%), dark brown for 19 (26%), reddish-brown for 5 (7%), greyish brown for 7 (10%), salmon brown for 1 (1%) and yellow-brown for 1 (1%) accession.

Quantitative variations of 7 traits in chickpea were recorded. The range values revealed the highest and lowest performance of the accessions for different traits. The range values for the number of basal primary branches per plants  2.60 to 5.00, number of seeds per pod 1.00 to 3.00, number of pods per plant 20.20 to 247.60, seed weight per plant  4.35 to 65.89 g, 100-seed weight 8.45 to 19.10 g, days to 50% flowering 67.00 to 80.00 and days to maturity 115.00 to 118.00. The trait seed weight per plant showed the highest CV (37.42%) whereas days to maturity showed the lowest (0.69%). The coefficient of variation (CV) indicated the variation among the accessions for the respective trait. The genetic variability of 73 accessions of chickpea was estimated on the basis of qualitative and quantitative traits. The accession BD 6138 showed the highest number of basal primary branches 5.00), BD 6306 had the highest number of seeds per pod, BD 6406 had the highest number of pods per plant (247.6), BD 6300 had the highest seed weight per plant (65.89 g) and BD 6389 had the highest 100-seed weight (19.10 g). Days to 50% flowering were the lowest (67 days) in a total of 13 accessions and a total of 6 accessions matured in a minimum of 115 days.
