A field experiment was carried out at PRC, Ishwardi, and RARS, Jashore to evaluate 11 chickpea genotypes under late sown conditions. High temperature or heat was imposed by delaying sowing dates i.e. normal (22th-25th November) and late sowing (22th-25th December). Chickpea genotypes were assessed based on various yield contributing traits and yield. However, there was a significant interaction of the date of sowing with genotypes. The genotypes suffered from reduced growth and yield due to heat exposure under late sown conditions. Pods per plant and plant height also abruptly reduced in tested genotypes in the 2nd date of sowing. On average 460 kg/ha to 745 kg/ha yield was reduced on the 2nd date of sowing. All the entries showed 3-16 days earlier in maturity on the second date of sowing due to forced maturity. The entry ICCV 07102 and BARI Chola-10 performs better in the late sown conditions in both locations.

The experiment was designed to evaluate chickpea genotypes under late sown conditions.

The experiment consisted of eleven entries including BARI Chola-10 as check. The trial was conducted in an RCB design with 3 replications at PRC, Ishwardi, Pabna, and RARS, Jashore. The lines were ICCV 07102, BCX 09010-9, BCX 13008-3, BCX 13002-3, BCX 01008-4, BCX 13002-2, BCX 13004-4, BCX 13005-8, BCX 01008-8 and ICCV 12110. The high temperature was imposed by delaying sowing dates i.e. normal (22nd November at Ishwardi, 25th December at Jashore) and late sowing (22th December at Ishwardi and 25th December at Jashore). Each entry was sown in unit plot of 4 rows × 4 m long with a spacing of 50 cm between rows. Spacing between two plots was 1 m. Recommended fertilizers were used at the rate of 20:40:20:10 kg/ha (NPKS) during final land preparation. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully at 3 to 5 cm depth and then covered by soil. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and crusts were broken. Weeding was done to keep the plots free from weeds. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with checks. At maturity, the best individual lines were selected on the basis of earliness, disease reaction, and higher yield. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. Yield contributing characters were taken from the 10 randomly selected plants from the middle rows of each plot. The statistical analysis was done using Statistics-10 software.

The effect of two dates of sowing on yield and yield contributing traits are recorded. There was a significant difference in yield and yield contributing characters in the two dates of sowing. In general genotypes under 1st sowing produced higher yields compared to late sowing. However, there was a significant interaction of the date of sowing with genotypes. The genotypes suffered from reduced growth and yield due to heat exposure. Some general trends are observed as follows.

Pods per plant: Pods per plant also abruptly reduced in tested genotypes in the 2nd date of sowing and on an average 14-58 pod was less in the 2nd date of sowing at Ishwardi. At Jashore, on the 2nd date of sowing and on average 8-32 pods was less in the 2nd date of sowing.

Yield (kg/ha): At Ishwardi, The highest mean seed yield (2129 kg/ha) was found in BCX 13002-2 followed by BCX 13004-4 and ICCV 07102 on the first date of sowing. But ICCV 07102 was the highest yielding genotype (1696 kg/ha) in 2nd sowing where much heat /temperature was exposed followed by BARI chola-10 and BCX 09010-9. On average 460 kg/ha yield was reduced on the 2nd date of sowing. The highly affected genotype due to exposure to heat was BCX 13002-3 and the least affected genotype was ICCV 07102 in case of yield.

At Jashore, The highest mean seed yield (2291 kg/ha) was found in ICCV 07102 followed by BCX 13004-4 and BCX 13005-8 on the first date of sowing. But ICCV 07102 was the highest yielding genotype (1425 kg/ha) in 2nd sowing where much heat /temperature was exposed followed by BARI chola-10 and BCX 09010-9. On average 745 kg/ha yield was reduced on the 2nd date of sowing. The highly affected genotype due to exposure to heat was BCX 13004-4 and the least affected genotype was BARI Chola-10 in case of yield.

Days to maturity and plant height (cm): In respect of these characters, all the entries took less than 7-16 days at Ishwardi and 3-8 days at Jashore in maturity on the second date of sowing due to forced maturity. Plant height was also reduced on the 2nd date of sowing. On average, the genotypes were shorter by 7.2 to 30.3 cm at Ishwardi and 3.2 to 14.2 at Jashore on the 2nd date of sowing compared to 1st sowing. From this investigation, it might be concluded that none of the advanced lines, except ICCV 07102, performed better under late planting conditions in both locations. However one of the released varieties like; BARI Chola-10 and promising genotypes like ICCV 07102, BCX 13002-2, and BCX 09010-9 produced comparatively higher yields under late planting conditions. Hence these genotypes may be used under late planting conditions. For confirmation of the results, the trial should be repeated in the next year at both locations.
