Present Situation of Floating Bed Agriculture in Gopalgonj District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the present situation of the floating bed agriculture system in kotalipara Upazila under Gopalgonj district. Data were obtained from 50 randomly selected floating agriculture system practiced farmers. Data for the study were generated during the growing season of 2011. Floating agriculture practice is a good and popular practice of the low-laying areas especially in Gopalgonj where lands remain submerged most of the time of the year. Farmers prepared their bed during May-June after completion of the Boro rice harvesting. They constructed their bed in circular, square and rectangular shapes. Bottle gourd, Wax gourd, Ladies finger and turmeric were cultivated by the farmers in these beds. The findings of the study revealed that three-fourth (74%) of the farmers had medium to high knowledge on floating agriculture systems. Benefits derived from the production of Turmeric on the floating bed as single cropping is higher (6550Tk.) than the plain land. Profits from the cultivation of Ladies finger with Bottle gourd as intercropping on the floating bed is higher (2120Tk.) than in the plain land. It is also found that profits become double when production is done early or late. This system has great opportunity to implement because in Gopalgonj lands remain submerged most of the time of the year.

Objectives:

Our study has focused on the nature and characteristics of the system practiced in Gopalgonj, where local farmers have demonstrated the potential for the sustainable use of such common-property local water resources. All the activities of the practice are environment friendly and can prove to be an alternative livelihood option. Keeping in view the above situation the present study was undertaken in order to study the present situation of the floating bed agriculture system in Gopalgong district.

Methodology:

This study was conducted in the Kotalipara Upazila under Gopalgonj district on the consideration that the amount of low laying waterlogged areas in this district is high as a result it is one of the leading floating bed agriculture system practiced area. Nine villages were selected purposively as the study area. Data for the study were generated during the growing season of 2011. Random sampling technique was followed in selecting the respondents. 50 floating bed practiced farmers were randomly selected from those nine villages. The required data were generated through directly interviewing the farmers using a pre-structured open-formed questionnaire. Simple tabular method of analysis was carried out to get the expected results. The sum, mean, percentage, ratio, were used for analyzing data. Economic analysis was done based on the prevailing market price of all inputs and output costs reported by the farmers. Gross margin and benefit cost ratio over gross return were used as the basic indicators to assess the performance of the floating bed agriculture system.

Bangladesh has always suffered from floods, cyclones, and storm surges during the monsoon season in lowlaying areas because it is the largest delta of the world. The research findings revealed that farmers prepared their floating bed in May-June after harvesting of Boro rice. They prepared their bed in circular, square and rectangular shape. In these bed Ladies fingers, Turmeric, Sweet gourd, Wax gourd, Red amaranth were cultivated by the farmers. Farmers used their indigenous knowledge for the production of the crops in floating bed. Management practices are not difficult and farmers done as usual practices as they do. The findings of the study also presented that three-fourth (74%) of the farmers had medium to high knowledge on floating agriculture systems. This system has a great opportunity to implement because in Gopalgonj lands remains submerged most of the time of the year. It is also found that benefits derived from floating bed vegetable and spices production is more than plain land. The floating agricultural system is being practiced in Bangladesh for a long period of time (three to four hundred years) but in a limited extent. Now it is becoming a time need technology to adapt to the vulnerable waterlogged situation and it is a useful technology considering the economical, environmental and as well as social aspects in Gopalgonj.
