A field experiment was conducted during July to December 2002 in aman season to evaluate the yield attributes of three high yielding rice varieties at different locations of Metropolitan Agriculture Area, Khulna. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three high-yielding varieties BRRI dhan 32, 33 and 39, in eight locations coupling urea treatment and replicated thrice. BRRI dhan 32 yielded significant (P>0.01) results on plant height, number of panicle per hill and yi eld. Based on data presented, it can be concluded that BRRI dhan 32 is a potential candidate to be cultivated in parts of South West Bangladesh in saline soil.

Despite their huge potentials, to our knowledge, no work update has shown the location-based performance of these varieties particularly yield and yield attributes in South West Coastal region of Bangladesh under urea fertilizer application. In this report, we tried to investigate the performance of BRRI dhan 32, 33, 39 cultivated at various locations of the Metropolitan Agriculture Area of Khulna district under South West Coastal Region of Bangladesh.

This study was conducted during the period of July to December 2002 at 8 locations of the Metropolitan Agriculture Area in Khulna district. The 8 locations were Gollamari, Maddhadanga (Daulatpur), Rayermohal, Kashemnagar, Mohesshorpasa, Daulatpur, Sonadanga (KDA) and Boyra under Khulna Metropolitan Agriculture Area. The soil characters of the plots were loamy to clay-loam. Soil pH ranged from 7.9 to 8.3 and that of salinity ranged from 0.85-2.24 Sm-1 having low fertility status. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were two factors viz. factor A: 8 locations and factor B: 3 rice varieties. So there were 24 combinations. The field was ploughed 20-25 cm deep by a plough in summer after making saturated before transplanting. Puddling was done by a puddler about two weeks ahead of transplanting. The field was puddled by 3-4 runs of puddler in standing water. The seedlings were uprooted from the nursery at the optimum age of 4 to 5 weeks. The transplanting was done by placing 2-3 seedlings per hill at 20 x10 cm distance. Urea, TSP and MP fertilizers were applied at 150 kg, 55 kg and 45kg ha-1, respectively. Nitrogen was applied in three equal doses. First application was done 15 days after transplanting (DAT), the second at tillering stage (25-30 DAT) and the third at the panicle initiation stage (56-65 DAT). All of TSP and MP were applied at the final land preparation. A depth of 3-6 cm of water was maintained up to the dough stage of the crop. Water was allowed to stand at 2-5 cm higher during 10 days after the transplanting and flowering stage, respectively. Weeding was done timely at 20 DAT and 50-60 DAT.

Harvesting of the crop: The right stage for harvesting was when about 80 percent of panicles had ripened spikelets. Rice crop was harvested when the grain contained about 20 percent of moisture (teeth biting). The crop was cut with serrate-edged sickles by hand. The crop was left in the field for a few days to dry. Collection and analysis of data: Plant height, number of effective tiller and panicle per hill were recorded at the mature stage. In contrast, the number of grains per panicle, thousand-grain weights and yield ha-` were determined after harvest. Data on various parameters were analyzed by MSTAT-C program. The differences between the pair of means were evaluated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
