The study was conducted during the period July 2014 to June 2016. Data of the consumption of a different type of pesticides in the country during the last ten years (2005-2014) were collected from different sources of government. These data were used to find out the situation and trend of pesticide consumption in Bangladesh. A field survey was also conducted to find out the situation of insects of tomato, insecticide used and their performance in the farmers field. Tomato growers, who were using insecticides as a pest control measure, were selected as the respondent of the study. Total six villagers were selected of which two from each locations such as village Kostiarpara and Jaformondolpara under Sadar upazila of district Mymensingh; village Porabari and Sattarkandi in Upazila Dhanbari of district Tangail and Talihati and Tapirbari village from Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district. A total of 120 farmers, 40 from each district were selected randomly. The study revealed that during the last ten years (2005-2014) pesticide consumption was increased by 102% in the year 2008 (48688.02 MT) compared to 2005 (24092.18 MT). Consumption was declined from 48,688 MT in 2008 to 35801.68 MT in the year 2014 which was still 48% more compared to 2005. It was also observed that consumption of insecticides was increased up to the year 2008 (30115.18 MT), but it was reduced by 46.58% in 2014 (16084.98 MT) compared to 2008. On the other hand consumption of miticide, fungicide, herbicide and rodenticide was increased by 119.60%, 71.60%, 87.58% and 72.05%, respectively in 2014 from the year 2005. The average infestation of fruit worm was 83%, while 60% and 46% of them mentioned aphids and armyworms as the damaging insects of tomato, respectively. Among different organophosphorus insecticides, most of the respondent farmers were used diazinon (24%), chlorpyrifos (31%) and fenitrothion (18%). 25% of respondent farmers said that pesticides used to control insects was very effective (75-100%). A proportion of 33% of the farmers did not take any safety measures at all. During pesticide application, 14% and 31% of respondents covered their face and body, respectively.

  Pesticide

There is limited study and research information about the quality control system of pesticides in Bangladesh. Besides no systematic study has yet been performed, no questions of ensuring the utilization of quality pesticides in the farmer's field or at the farm level. Thus, the proposed study will include the trend of pesticides consumption in some selected districts of Bangladesh.

The study was conducted during the period July 2014 to June 2016. Data of consumption of different type of pesticides in the country during last ten years (2005-2014) were collected from different sources of government (Plant Protection Wing, Department of Agricultural Extension, Khamarbari, Dhaka) and non-government organizations (Bangladesh Crop Protection Association, Dhaka). These data were used to find out the situation and trend of pesticide consumption in Bangladesh. A field survey was conducted to find out the situation of insects of tomato, an insecticide used and their performance in the farmer's field. Face to face interview of the farmers was taken using a structured and pre-tested questionnaire on the following aspects: i) age, ii) level of education, iii) farm size, iv) major insects of tomato, v) insecticide used, vi) effectiveness of insecticide and vii) protection measures taken. The collected data were compiled and tabulated in proper form and were subjected to analysis.

During the last ten years (2005-2014) consumption of pesticide was increased up to the year 2008. From 2009 it was gradually declined except in the year 2011. Among different forms of insecticides, consumption of granular was reduced but liquid and powder rapidly increased. On the other hand consumption of miticide, fungicide, herbicide and rodenticide was increased in 2014 compared to 2005. The study also revealed that the pesticides used to control insects was very effective (75-100% insects were controlled), whlile 40% and 27% farmers viewed effective (50 to 57% were controlled) and small effective (less than 50% were controlled), respectively.
