Effects of Preservation System on Nutritional Quality of Mulberry (morus Alba L.) Leaves and Cocoon Parameters of Silkworm (bombyx Mori L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The nutritional quality of mulberry leaves preserved under different conditions were analysed and its influence on cocoon production of Bomhyx mori silkworm was studied. Moisture, crude protein and starch content of mulberry leaves decreased while the crude fat and total sugar content of mulberry leaves increased significantly (P<0.01) due to preservation. The highest amount of crude protein, crude fat and total sugar were observed in mulberry leaves stored in wooden framed box covered by wet gunny cloth while mulberry leaves preserved in polyethylene bag, wooden tray covered by polyethylene sheet and wooden tray covered by wet gunny cloth contained the highest amount of moisture, starch and crude fibre, respectively. The larval weight, single cocoon weight, single shell weight, cocoon yield/200 larvae and filament length were found to be the highest on feeding mulberry leaves preserved in wooden framed box covered by wet gunny cloth followed by polyethylene bag. However, the difference in cocoon characters on feeding mulberry leaves preserved under the above two treatments were not statistically significant.

Objectives:

To select suitable leaf preservation system for qualitative and quantitative cocoon production.

Methodology:

Mulberry variety, BM-3 of lowcut form was used for the study. The leaves were collected at 8,0 a.m. and the fresh weight of leaf was recorded. The leaves were preserved under different conditions for 24 hours as follows P0 (control): Initial nutrient status (Just after harvest). P1 :Wooden tray covered by wet gunny cloth, P2 : Wooden framed box covered with wet gunny cloth, P3 : Wooden tray covered by polyethylene sheet and P4: Polyethylene bag. After 24 hr of preservation, the nutritional composition of mulberry leaves were determined. Three replications were maintained under each treatment. Fresh mulberry leaf samples were dried at 70°C until constant weight was obtained and moisture content of leaves was determined by subtracting the dried weight from the fresh weight. Total sugar, starch, crude fat, mineral and crude fibre content of mulberry leaves were determined by the standard chemical analytical methods of AOAC (1984). Nitrogen was determined by micro-Kjeldahl method and crude protein was estimated using the conversion factor 6.25. The experiment was conducted in the year 1993 during the different seasons namely, February-March (Si), May-June (82), August-September (S3) and November-December (84). The mean temperature and relative humidity were 30.56±1.60°C and 70.10±4.40%, 29.30±3.50°C and73.80±7.00%, 25.70±1.30°C and 83.90+3.80%, and 22.70±2.30°C and 71.30+3.60% respectively in four seasons.

Achievement/Findings:

The feeding of mulberry leaves preserved under different conditions showed significant effect on the cocoon production of BSRI-85/3 and BV (J) races of silkworm. The higher values of single cocoon weight, single shell weight, cocoon yield / 200 larvae and filament length of both the races of silkworm fed on mulberry leaves preserved under wooden framed box covered by wet gunny cloth and polyethylene bag (Table 3) might be due to better preservation and maintenance of nutritive value of mulberry leaves under those conditions. Wooden framed box covered by wet gunny cloth or polyethylene bag seems to be useful to preserve mulberry leaves for a period of up to 24 hrs. Mulberry leaves preserved under these conditions showed to contain higher amount of moisture, crude protein, total sugar and starch compared to other preservation conditions. Moreover, mulberry leaves fed to silkworms preserved under the above conditions' produced higher yield of quality cocoons due to less reduction of nutrients in the mulberry leaves.
