Pest and Natural Enemy Incidence at BRRI Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Overall insect pest incidence at BRRI farm, Gazipur was low in the reporting year. However, green leafhopper (GLH), white leafhopper (WLH) and grasshopper (GH) were dominated in all three seasons. The highest incidences of GLH and WLH were observed in seed beds of Aus season, but highest population of GH was found in the T. Aman seed bed. Higher numbers of natural enemies were found in the Aus and Boro seasons than Aman season. Spider (SPD), damselfly, carabid beetle(CDB) and lady bird beetle(LBB) were the dominant natural enemies in all three habitats. The domination of SPD population, irrespective of habitats, was observed in the Aus and Aman season, but that of LBB was observed in seed beds, grass fallow lands and irrigated rice of the Boro season.

Objectives:

To study the pest and their natural enemy incidence patterns in rice

Methodology:

Populations of rice insect pests, their natural enemies and crop damage intensities in five habitats (seed bed, rice ratoon, grass fallow, irrigated rice, and upland rice) were monitored weekly at BRRI farm, Gazipur. From each habitat one hundred complete sweeps were made and the collected pest and natural enemies were counted. Damage intensity due to some major insect pests and their populations were also estimated from 20 randomly selected hills in each week.

Higher incidences of insect pests were found in Aus and T. Aman seasons than the Boro season. Green leafhopper GLH), white leafhopper (WLH) and grasshoppers (GH) were the most abundant pests and found in all the three seasons. The rice fields and seed beds of all seasons harbored higher populations of GLH, GH and WLH. The highest populations of GLH and WLH were found in Aus seed bed, but GH hopper population occurred in higher number in T. Aman seed bed. Lowest numbers of insect pests were found in ratoon and grass fallow habitats in the three seasons. Higher numbers of natural enemies were found in Aus and Boro seasons than T. Aman season. Spider (SPD), damsel fly (Dam. fly), ladybird beetle (LBB) and carabid beetle (CDB) were the dominant predators in all the habitats of the seasons except in a few cases. Like insect pests, the natural enemies also concentrated mostly in seedbed and rice fields in all the seasons. Domination of SPD population, irrespective of habitats except the ratoons of Aman, was observed in Aus and Aman season, but that of LBB was observed in the Boro season. Green mirid bug (GMB) was found only in the seed bed of Aus season. Weekly counts, taken directly from 20 hills, showed that the population and the damage done by insect pests were below the ETL in all the three rice seasons. GLH and GH were the most abundant pests in hill counts. Damages caused by stem borers (SB), GH, long horn cricket (LHC), rice leaf folder (RLF) and whorl maggot (WM) were observed throughout the year. The damage due to SB was comparatively higher in upland Aus habitat. Among the predators the CDB in Aus and the spiders (SPD) in Aman and Boro dominated the populations respectively.
